i don't know if you can call it a loophole though. Everyone knows about it and all drafted players have a stale date for rights...As i understand it:
NCAA, 4 years unsigned they go UFA
Euros, 4 years unsigned they go UFA
CHL, 2 years they go back into the draft, 2 more years and they become UFA
maybe someone could correct me if i am incorrect, but from what i recall that is how the current system works.

Carolina might just be left holding the bag.

If a goof chunk of our fanbase had their way, we'd be left holding the bag right now.

Canes owner says they will trade Fox
https://www.newsobserver.com/sports/...228708234.html
Quote:
With Harvard defenseman Adam Fox balking at signing an entry-level contract with the Carolina Hurricanes, team owner Tom Dundon said Monday the Canes are looking at another option.
“We’ll try to trade him,” Dundon said. “I think we’ll do OK. We’ll see.”
|
Friedman on 960 says he is hearing Carolina is asking for a lot. He isn't sure if they are doing it out of spite to force him to go back to school or if they think he is a very good player and just want a good return.
Also said that the Rangers are near the top if not at the top of Fox's list and that some teams believe that the Rangers will wait for UFA rather than pay the price now
He is also getting mixed reviews on Fox with some thinking he is elite with others not convinced.

for the record, Slats is no longer the Rangers' GM -- it's Jeff Gorton

I'm confused about Fox being associated with the Rangers. They have an undersized offensive right handed defenseman in Tony DeAngelo, as well as Kevin Shattenkirk. Additionally, I recall reading that Adam Fox grew up an Islanders fan.

Exactly correct.
So in every instance the player can become a UFA 4 years after draft. There is no loop hole. And Fox is being completely forthright. This is not an Erixon type situation. In my opinion.

The lengths of time are the same, but the situations are not. It isn't a loophole, but it IS a problem. And there are some potential fixes, such as making it 5 years for everyone instead of 4.

Am I the only one who did not realize how well the Canes were doing this year? 1 point behind Winnipeg and Nashville and 2 points ahead of Vegas. Think the blockbuster trade was win-win for both teams, even if it gets worse for Carolina in the offseason.

i guess it remains to be seen how the NHL addresses it, or if the NHLPA would agree to it...
whether its a problem depends on whether this is a trend or just a blip...

I looked at the first two rounds of three recent drafts (2010-12) to see how many college-bound players signed with the teams that drafted them. I did not count players who were supposed to go NCAA but switched to junior, but those players (Jack Campbell, Jarred Tinordi, etc.) signed with their draft teams anyway. The result? There were 38 kids that signed with their draft teams and two – Hayes and Samuel Kurker (St. Louis) – that did not.
|
https://thehockeynews.com/news/artic...iness-as-usual
in the last draft, the NHL drafted a record 67 players that chose the NCAA route, so NHL executives do not appear to be too concerned with the outliers that choose going to college. We'll see if there is more kids that choose the UFA route as opposed to finishing their degrees, as i couldn't find a lot of data outside of this article.
its not true to say that there is no penalty for players not to sign though: they pay a penalty by restricting their active earning years.
Fox, if he finishes his degree will have given up 2 years of earnings to do so, since it seems like Calgary wanted to sign him last year... Brady Tkachuk for example could have gone to college and finished his degree, but would have forfeited 3-4 years of earnings...
its inequity lies in the fact that CHL players go back into the draft after 2 years, but if they wanted to go UFA, they'd have to wait another 2 years (not signing after their second draft)

The difference though is an NCAA player has added incentive to wait, and that's to finish school. CHL and Euro players don't get that bonus.
Finishing school is a great incentive, I just wish it didn't waste a pick for whatever team drafted them.
I'm sure I've said it before but I'd like to see one extra year before a drafted player goes free agent. That way a player can finish school if they want, without the pressure of being a free agent. Then if they really do want to be a free agent they have to go play in europe for a year or something

It does. But we’ll see what they can get for him. Even Feaster was able to make chicken salad out of chicken #### with Erixon, with the difference being Erixon wouldn’t have been headed to UFA.

The Flames had the Rags and Erixon’s agent dead to rights on blatant tampering, and the Rags knew it, thus the generous trade to Calgary to avoid the Flames pursuing the tampering with the league.

Teams know the rules in advance also, and I expect they draft accordingly.
Nothing preventing CHL or European players from going to school while they wait out 4 years either, other than a CHL player has a lot tougher time keeping up with school, given the hockey schedule. The CHL encourages it though, by paying for education. At least, AFAIK that scholarship fund is also available to players still actively playing in the league.
