I could not ride my route without them, but I have hills, and lots of icy areas.

I go studs on both for winter riding. Don't mind that I'm slower, I just adjust departure times for that and the conditions.

I’ve never run studs, but I also fall a few times per winter. I was pondering running one on the front this season.

I have these on both front and back:

Yes, they do slow you down a bit. However I do like the extra confidence I get. Especially that much of my winter riding is in the dark.

I wimped out and turned back at the 30km mark on the MEC ride. Extra kudos to Jeff and Kevin.

I don’t blame you. That was a chilly one. Despite two socks and overshoes, my feet were numb by 50km. Headwind and gross hills for the last 20km was stupid too.

It's my first season commuting, and seeing how far into the season I can take it.
I think I'm ok with the cold for now (morning low of 3, high of 7, and wearing shorts, wool sweater and a softshell/windbreaker).
Once the snow starts to fly, I might give it up (gravel bike with gatorskins, or original knobby tires). Might need to go find some tights as my shins and ankles get a bit cold in the wind.

I really miss my bike commute. Not enough to want to move out of the home office but the ride into work was great.
It's tougher to get out for long rides when the weather is this crap. I've moved to the trainer already to make sure I don't get fat, and, while it's a lot harder than my commute, it's just not as fun.
The weather is looking promising next week so I'm going to try for a couple 100km+.

If the weather looks decent for Saturday the 29th I may do the Chestermere run again. Work logistics and weather are keeping me from my target kms.
What are you guys using for gloves this time of year? I don't need much- something the thickness of golf gloves may work. Was tempted to just go pick up a right hand golf glove actually. The ones on MEC seem to be out of my price range.

^ i ride with full finger gloves in the summer time.
for commuting i use a fall/spring glove for the morning that is slightly heavier than regular full finger gloves and a regular full finger glove for the ride home. i find that the fall/spring gloves are good until about -7 or so.
for fatbiking i alternate between a pair of lobster mitts and 45 north pogies. each of them have their pros and cons.

You don't even need any special "cycling" gloves. I just wear normal winter gloves that aren't bulky.

In the morning, I pair my regular fingerless mesh cycling gloves with some liners underneath. Very versatile, in the warmer afternoon ride home, I just wear the cycling gloves.

‘Mechanics’ gloves are the perfect cycling IMO. Available in a good array of materials, weights, protectors etc and bullet proof yet tactile, and usually priced very well.

I rode for about 5 years in a pair of red Snap-On gloves. They were great and out-lasted most cycling gloves. I really should get another pair.

I’m going to buy a new mountain bike. Specialized Stumpjumper for $1850 and add a dropper post for extra $$ vs Giant Trance 3 for $1950? I’m not very knowledgeable about component lines and am interested in opinions regarding the specs if anyone is familiar.

Did the Baie St Marie Gran Fondo in Nova Scotia today. First road riding event ever, and had an awesome time. The route was beautiful, along the ocean in several spots, and the community did a fantastic job of hosting. Tons of locals out cheering on all the racers, and excellent Lobster dinner after the ride. I’d definitely recommend it, and we will probably be back out here next year.
I rented a bike, and rode a very nice full carbon Opus. Now I guess my road bike buying for next season will probably go into the next price range of a carbon bike....
