Well I can think of ONE guy hoping to see an offer sheet.....

Afterward, Brendan told his father, “Dad, how can you carry a grudge like that.”
“It’s easy I’m Irish. We can carry (one) for centuries,” Burke replied.

According to Dreger the Oilers are pretty firm on getting Nurse signed to ~$3 mil per year.

In an interesting article, the most shocking thing was that David Staples has been transcribing other people’s interviews and work since 2011!

I would think that Nurse' agent will tell the Oilers to cram their $3 mil with walnut, and see you in November.

If the Oilers are firm at paying him $3 million, then to "screw" them, you'd have to offer sheet Nurse at over $4 million, and that will cost you a first and third rounder.
Would I trade a first and a third for Nurse? Nope.

According to this:
Quote:
Offer Sheet (AAV) Compensation $1,339,575 or below None
Over $1,339,575 to $2,029,59 3rd
Over $2,029,59 to $4,059,322 2nd
Over $4,059,322 to $6,088,980 1st, 3rd
Over $6,088,980 to $8,118,641 1st, 2nd, 3rd
Over $8,118,641 to $10,148,302 (2) 1st, 2nd, 3rd
Over $10,148,302 (4) 1st
|
https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/...ayers-get-one/
It would only be a second if they kept it under $4,059,322, right? Which I assume would be where other teams would aim.

I think that is pretty fair value to be honest. Not really a big Nurse fan but the guy had a good season last year. He was 2nd on the team playing 22 minutes per game, put 26 points, highest d-man on the team at +15, and played against the other teams top lines most of the time. Still only 23 years old and was always considered a bit of a project.
If you were a team that was a contender that was interested in Karlsson (Tampa, Vegas, Dallas) and you end up losing those sweepstakes, then a 1st and a 3rd for Nurse could be an option. Not nearly the same quality of player or impact but will be a much cheaper (both in acquisition cost and salary) option.
If I'm Vegas and I think I'm out on Karlsson. Then I look at Schmidt being out for 20 games, plus the fact I have 6 picks in the first 3 rounds this year...giving up a 1st and a 3rd and signing Nurse to something like 5 years @$4.5M per season seems pretty reasonable.
Plus Oilers will be in cap hell for the foreseeable future - so not like they are going to be able to respond with their own offer sheet.

I didnt realize just how screwed the oilers are, the only contracts coming off the books this offseason is Talbot and their backup and Talbot is signed to a very friendly contract and will require a raise. Also Pullarvi becomes an RFA who will seemingly get a healthy raise this offseason and none of this factors in Nurse's extension that will surely eat up the majority of the 3.9 mil in space they currently have.
What an absolute mess this team is in without accomplishing a thing. Actually mind blown.
If Sekara retires do they still suffer from the cap hit? 5.5 til 20/21 is quite frankly an absolute disaster

2x4 would be a decent deal for Nurse. The Oilers would certainly match, but they'd be annoyed about it.

That's below market value. He would be foolish to accept that.

Why would a player retire - and lose $16 Million in salary?
Hypothetically though, IF Sekera retired, his salary would come off the books. There is no chance that an injured player retires though.

A team can offer him between $3.979M and $4.059M for the cost of a 2nd, and the Oilers can't match.

Of course they can, and of course they would. They could match and immediately trade him for more than a 2nd rounder, for one thing. But more likely, they would move pieces around and/or make a bottom-of-the-roster trade or two and keep him.

Yeah, I don't think there is any chance the Oilers lose Nurse, but then again, I also do not believe there is any chance that he signs a contract in Edmonton for less than $4.0 m—even on a bridge-deal.

Actually they can't.
If a team matches an offer sheet, they can't trade the player for one calendar year.
