They'd only have to do a quick once-over through this forum to find out that he's worth a bucket of pucks.

Draft Pick

If Backlund is to be moved I think the best return would come from a team requiring cap space. Given the Flames current cap situation and Backlund's price tag, we could possibly receive a more established player of similar age with a richer contract.
The closest comparable recent trade that comes to mind would be the MPS for Perron swap from this offseason. I wouldn't mind a trade like that but tend to agree with previous posters who stated that swapping him for a likely 2nd to 4th round pick does little to help the team, now, or in the future.

Yes, you are right.. Booth doesn't spring to mind as a guy you want around kids. However, he can also be a good example of what not to be. I wouldn't mind if he was a healthy scratch every game, and then use one of the compliance buyouts in the off-season.
However, I am not advocating Booth per se, but players of the ilk with mistakes for contracts. Malone and Booth both sprang to mind instantly, as does Liles, Mezaros (though only signed for this year), and so on. The compliance buyout would make any of these contracts just for the duration of the rest of the season - if the owners are inclined (and considering they have told Burke and Feaster that they are free to spend to the cap as they see fit, I am inclined to believe that the Flames would do this kind of a trade IF the price was right). Best 'value' would be guys on multi-year deals - I don't think Minnesota or Philly would pay too much to get rid of Mez or Heatley (and I would really hate having Heatley more than Booth - but if the price was right...)..

Garrioch says Shane O'Brien is available too:
Quote:
Calgary Flames GM Jay Feaster has been busy working the phones. It’s believed he has served notice C Mikael Backlund and D Shane O’Brien are available. O’Brien has a cap hit of $2 million while Backlund is making $1.5 million. Both have deals that run through 2014-15 ...

Colborne has nothing to do with it.
Backlund has made Backlund unnecessay with his performance.

I see very little chance that another team would want O'Brien and his $1.9 million, 2 year contract. I don't think he would be picked up on waivers. The only chance of getting rid of O'Brien this year or before the 2015 trade deadline is if they eat half his salary.

I could see the sabres wanting SOB, if they give him regular shifts every game that #1 pick will be theirs for sure!

I could see a SOB for Tootoo swap being plausible. They're on nearly identical contracts. Maybe SOB and Backlund could be packaged to Detroit in some sort of cap dump deal, seeing as the Wings have more than a couple warts in their cap structure that I'm sure they'd like to be rid of, and have almost no room to play with.
Quincey, for example, doesn't seem to be doing so hot in his second stint in Detroit. Would SOB+Backlund for Quincey, Tootoo, and a pick/prospect be out of the realm of possibility? Just some food for thought.

I hope Feaster is exploring all trade options, however I would really rather he kept Backlund around & looked to trade Stajan instead.

This just adds further confusion as to why Feaster signed SOB in the first case. I like the idea of moving him to open a spot for a younger player, but it was just months ago we signed him....
Perhaps Burke is setting a new vision forcing Feaster to undo some of his pre-Burke moves?

He was part of the Tanguay-Sarich trade.

He didn't sign SOB. It was a Sarich for SOB trade (with tangs for jones as well).

I don't think Feaster signed SOB he already was signed by Colorado when we traded for him wasn't he?
Can't see many/any team have much interest in him. Maybe if we are taking a useless cap dump back like Liles a team might take him but can't see them then adding a solid piece like Gardner.
Maybe SOB for Liles and a 4th or something like that or a 6th rounder like MacDermid got, but with his bad defense and love of taking stupid penalties he really isn't appealing to play-off teams and doesn't add much that a run of the mill plug doesn't to a non-play-off team.
