Oh I have some myself too, and am a fan...I'm just surprised how popular they are with kids now too. Never really saw them as being particularly cool.

One of the weird things about growing up in a small town. Most of the kids in my school thought the movie 8 seconds was the peak of human coolness. I actually got more #### from my classmates for wearing designer clothing in junior high than I ever did for not wearing name brands because most of them were dressed like they were going to the rodeo after school. Which now that I think about it, quite a few of them probably were. In fact we didn’t even have a junior high. It was just K to 5 elementary in one school and then grade 6 to 12 in another.

And by the time I got to high school in the city most of the brands I already wore suddenly became popular. That was when skate/snowboard fashion all of a sudden became super popular.

Makes sense. I was 90s to early 2000s for elementary/Jr High. Worth mentioning that rugby pants/track pants were still around at that time. IIRC, lots of kids used to wear pants underneath track pants if they didn't have snow pants/didn't want the bulk of snow pants. After recess, take off the track pants and go through the rest of the day in their normal pants and pants wouldn't be as water logged and wet.

I remember when rugby pants and Lacoste shirts were required by preppies for a brief time in the 80s.

It caused a sensation when Tim O’Neal, the toughest guy at Milton Williams, came to school in rugby pants. And the rugby pants we wore as kids in the early 80s didn’t look like the sporty, athletic ones undercover posted. More like this:

Yeah, I'm not sure what exactly rugby pants were. They certainly weren't athletic/workout pants.

I remember having a pair that had big pockets on the legs, like cargo pants.

Was it just another name for what are called casual pants/khakis now?

I'm gonna disagree.

I'm a '71 vintage.

That photo you posted is not rugby pants. They are Khaki.

IIRC rugby pants didnt have a zipper or a button closure, just an elasticized waist with a drawstring. They might have had a fake zipper looking flap.
Theyd be more like todays sweatpants.

The popping sounds of the buttons like a fidget before we knew what those were? Or people being pantsed?

So many guys being sent to the office for pantsing the girls, but it was always a risk, no idea why people would wear underwear instead of shorts for tearaways.

I think near the end, modified designs for tearaways made it a little harder to pants someone, but the fad was basically dead even before those options began showing up.
