Fun fact: The 1988 Calgary Olympics were easily the most expensive Winter Games in history to that point. In fact, Vancouver whined up a storm about how Calgary planned a "big ticket games" that cost something like 3x what they proposed to spend when we won the right to bid for 1988.
As far as the IOC goes, Calgary and Canada do have advantages that could counteract their god complex. The Calgary and Vancouver games were two of the greatest in Olympic history, and the country generally supports the Winter Olympics to a great degree. Calgary could conceivably walk in to a 2026 bid, at a time when many other cities are pulling out - and propose a revitalization of the games.
Which is almost exactly what the 1988 Calgary Games did.

Was Ken King's last promise that we'd hear something by Christmas?
I'm not counting on it, especially with KK's track record of empty promises.

If I was in charge of a new $400million+ development this would concern me. The flood thing I mean.

If I was in charge of a billion dollar investment that had no capital infusion from the Stampede Board, I would tell them to get lost and build something on land I own and control that already has existing LRT access

I really haven't followed all this that closely, but has there really been "promises" broken?

wow, almost 2 years since this thread was started and no news yet... I'm amazed they've managed to keep things under wraps as much as they have considering, by some posters accounts, they were quite far along in the planning process 2 years ago.

Ken King has been promising the details of the new arena "in the next few months" for at least the past 3 years.
At this point he is a broken record.

The new arena will probably have all the latest innovations from years ago(when it was originally designed). Computers throughout running windows xp with direct links yahoo and myspace(so you can upload photos from the arena), charging stations capable of handling both 30 pin and blackberry phones, a place to store your digital camera at your seat...

I am hoping for hockey arena and football stadium together in one area but I just can't figure where in Calgary they can build both. Of course it has to be accessible to CTrain.

I don't want to bash on you directly. but after dozens of pages of discussion on this topic, a bunch of accurate, albeit amateur overlays on google maps showing that the existing buildings could fit in these spaces. We should know,
Greyhound/GLS Chev, A large percentage of people seem to think that is where it is going, but they would have to displace tenants.
The Vic Park Bus Barns, but there is no indication Calgary Transit is willing to give up the land. And its a long walk from the train
The Big4 is an option for only a hockey rink, It seems unlikely the Stampede would redevelop enough to fit a football Stadium on the south end of the grounds.
The North end of the Stampede grounds could be an option, but for some reason it seems like the Flames will try to get off Stampede park
Fire Park, but they would have to tear down occupied warehouses (that are owned by flames ownership), and the flames have stated it would be downtown.
Foothills Park, but it isn't downtown, the would need to re-draw some plans the city has, and where would the Stamps play for a year? And it does not address the on going noise issue with Varsity residents
And I guess some people think, Balzac, De Winton, or Bears Paw are Options

At the season ticket holders reception Sat night before the game Ken King dropped a few tidbits, probably already known:
- Tuesday's Herald will have an article about the new area, nothing official but it might have some new info.
- KK hinted the new stadium would have a dome to keep Stamp fans warm.
- They want it 'Downtown' as opposed to saying it 'will be' downtown. Suggests land deal is not done, I might be reading too much into the answer.

Dome stadium makes sense as it creates the opportunity to host more Grey Cups and increased fall attendance but it will be considerably more expensive than an open stadium.

Voted for Kodos
|
Domed stadium is only acceptable if the roof is retractable.
Playing football inside on a beautiful Summer eve is a much greater sin than playing outside in November.

May as well do it now before it's too costly and resource-intensive later on.

Stadium with a retractable roof would be awesome.
