I actually enjoyed the game and was OK with the result. This team is learning...patience is still key.

REALLY liked the look of the PP. They had modest success but moved the puck - and more importantly - moved THEMSELVES around. Most of last year's PP was standing still and throwing the puck around the perimeter. These guys are fast and learning where to be. Once more...patience please.

The over-the-top reactions to a team that is widely expected to be in the mushy middle are amazing to me. What do people really expect? A Cup Winner in October? Let's leave that to the No Goods. Thank you.

In Burke’s book he says how initially Sutter flat out said no to trading Phaneuf, then changed his mind and wants exactly all of the players the Leafs wanted to get rid of. Made it hurt even more!

Missed this game, on to the next one I guess!

Going 1 for 5 isn't going to cut it, not when Edmonton can only score on the PP.
I feel like the PP actually looks really good, its just early season execution that is struggling, imo. I think it will come around. Personally, I feel one of our biggest weaknesses so far is poor forward line construction. Very poor.

Huberdeau and Kadri are excellent veteran transition pieces if this team cannot get it together offensively. Trading off pieces would help if that's how the season turns out. Plus I hear there's this Iginla kid in the draft.
We've got the 2 underpeforming old guys on long term deals. Now we just need to draft a Heiskanen, Hintz, and Robertson and hope Wolf turns into Oettinger. Sounds like a piece of cake.

Yeah, Sutter has done massive damage to the course of this franchise on two seperate occasions. Unfortunately that cup run really helped earned him a lot of rope, and it hurt us a lot.

At the end of the day the cap world is not forgiving. You simply can not have big contracts that don’t equate to value. Huberdeau and Kadri making over 17 million dollars need to be dynamic. Good is not good enough.

This was not a good game from either of those guys and the track record dating back to last season is underwhelming. It’s unrealistic to think things will magically have changed from last season as lots of work needs to be done, but with those guys eating up so much cap room is very concerning.

Regarding Huberdeau, outside of points he leaves a lot to be desired so he needs to contribute on the scoresheet nightly if we have a chance to win. This isn’t a Tkachuk situation where he can be effective even when not putting up points. Huberdeaus game will never be to stir up the opposition or put up Selke numbers. His pay is strictly based on point production whether scoring or setting up goals.

You simply can’t make the same mistake with Lindholm and give him 9 + on a long term deal. The Kadri and Huby contracts should provide enough sound judgment to stay far far away.

The Flames are gonna struggle to score. They don’t have any elite offensive players. But I thought the Flames played well tonight. They worked hard. And I think it’s important to remember that they’re still learning the new defensive system.

Agree with most of your post -- and I agree Lindholm probably shouldn't be signed, but not because I don't think he'll provide the value.
I actually think he's clearly the best forward on this team, and has the best chance at aging well with a long contract. However, the Flames are not in a position to surround him with the level of teammates he needs to make the overall team great. It benefits no one to have him signed up for 8 years along with the other 2 big contracts you mentioned above, making up a core that doesn't inspire fear in anyone. The Flames would still be mid for years to come, and Lindholm wouldn't be playing on a contender. I think it very well may become apparent as the season goes on, that the better play for the Flames is to move him for promising assets, even though he's a very good player. If you sign him but don't see any near term pathway to becoming a contender, what would be the point?

He rests his grime-encrusted boots on a glass-top table encasing a priceless collection of pre-Jurassic trilobite fossils he purchased as a passing fancy on a trip to Aspen. "Those nerds at the natural history museum have no business acumen at all - not like me!" he scoffs, casually flicking a cake of manure off of his new, Calgary Flames-branded boots. He knows he will dispose of them soon, but he enjoys nothing more than the spectacle of watching others clean up his messes - at least, for the time being.

He pauses briefly to breathe in the aura of splendour and decadence he has built around himself, as unto a palace, before glancing over his shoulder at his 25-year-old Swedish supermodel wife. He scowls. "Why am I married to this disgusting pig," he asks himself, marveling at his own rippled and enormously chiseled Greek god-physique, "when I could have any woman I want?!"

His wife silently cries from the kitchen, as she re-lives the trauma from years gone by. She vividly recalls how her Papa would lecture her at the Viking feasting halls of her youth, reminding her that she is only fit to be a trophy bride for a man of means. She finishes her third glass of wine that morning and smiles briefly at her husband as he glares in her direction.

"Soon," she whispers to herself,

"Soon the Calgary Flames will win a cup, and the mummy's curse will be broken."

She glances, briefly, over at the floor-to-ceiling television opposite her indentured husband, and catches a glimpse of the day's scorecard.

"...But not this day."

She sobs once more, and pours what she hopes is her final glass.

PP is 3-for-11. Not sure how much more you can ask from it.

Maybe absolutely everything wasn’t Sutter’s fault?

Nah. Had to be all on him.

This supposed movement and fluidity that was described tonight that I did not see out there.

I saw WSH player skating out aggressively and breaking up out slow perimeter passes while guys stood and watched.

Game 1 was very good, I'll give it that.

I don’t really hate the start to the season. There’s some potential there and they really have looked good at times.

Probably the only thing on the ice that is concerning is Kadri and Huberdeau. At some point those contracts are going to become storylines and at least for Huberdeau, I really don’t know how well he handles pressure.

It wasn't all on him. The players needed to be held responsible too.

He was a dick though and needed to go. When staff members are even complaining you know it's bad.

It hasn't been a great start to the season but it could be worse. Having a good start last season didn't help them so maybe they can knock off all the bad habits early while still getting points.

At least Huberdeau looks capable of putting up points consistently.

Kadri looks like a +/- black hole who will struggle at virtually every facet of the game for a center, including faceoffs and knowing when he's offside.

I think it’ll take 10 games to figure out what this team is. Especially with the new coaches.

The big positive is Markstrom looks to have his head screwed on straight this season.

My big concern is the lack of gamebreakers. Not sure how you get around that one.
