Said it many times already, but it's not just the bad goals, it's the timing of the bad goals. There's a difference between letting a bad goal in when the team is up a couple, and letting a bad one in when the team just tied the game, or had the momentum and pressing. With Smith, it's more often than not the latter, and that is just not acceptable for even a backup in the NHL. At least not a backup for any team that thinks it's a contender anyways.

Rittich has 4 regulation losses on the year in 30 games...I think its fair to assume he finds a way to at least get a point tonight

Was at the Corral Hitmen game so I missed this one. Who's the whipping boy of the night other than Smith?

The most frustrating thing about Smith is his utter neglect in coming out and taking the net away from a shooter. Its like he refuses, he sits so far back in his net goals like the 3rd and 4th are going to go in. Look how deep he is in the net on this goal, its frustrating and legitimately why 90% of the goals he lets in go in. Even the bad ones that squeak in just over the goal line, he leaves himself no room for error that anything that trickles by him is in the net.
By no means did he completely cost us the game here but against any good team with him in net, the Flames need to score 5 to win. He should not be in net against any team in the top 20. Let him play against the bottom tier of teams.
Agreed with everybody who thought the officiating was awful. Also Backstrom should have had his teeth caved in at the end there.

Hell. You know what, the more I think about this game, the more I like it from a learning perspective.
Don't get me wrong, I want to see wins and I want to keep separation in the division. Despite this being a bit of a bore fest, it kind of had a playoff feel to it. There wasn't a ton of space and Tom Wilson was running around like an idiot.
The Flames were far from sharp, but it was a game that I think they can look back on. The top line isn't always going to be able to dictate, the defense isn't always going to be able to move the puck unencumbered. I hate to say it because I love the guy, but Backlund can't take that penalty in the last 2 minutes. It kind of reminded me of the Anaheim series two years ago. Awful goaltending AND bad penalties at bad times sunk that series. Learning experience.
I agree wholeheartedly with whoever said this earlier. This isn't a heavy team. They don't play a heavy game. Acquiring one tough player isnt going to change that.
These guys have to play their game, it is what got them to this point.
Tkachuk will do what he does. Neal and Bennett will hopefully do what they do, but this team is not built on physicality. Skating and skill is the name of the game.

Sure, it was obvious. But that interference on Tkachuk in the first was way more obvious. If you’re going to let things slide, just be consistent through out the whole damn game

Have to agree with Darren. That interference was insane and obvious. Then the soft calls in the 2nd and 3rd... embarrassing.

The flames can play the fast skilled game. That isn’t the problem. It’s guys like mangipanne and czarnik who do nothing along the boards who will doom us.
Give me a carter, simmonds, or someone else who hits and can handle physicality

He always is. So brutal. Terrible giveaway but that is a routine save for Rittich. He’d be 3 feet out further and that one is blocker or shoulder. 4th goal same thing.
Flames got outplayed tonight though. Reffing sucked (but it always does), and they were sloppy. Probably win that game with Rittich in? Maybe. 40 shots on goal.

fantastic.. you gave us a side PVR view, that doesnt show whether smith saw it or not, Great.
this is based on personal opinion, not actual sight since we dont have that view

But look how deep he is in the net. Regardless of whether he was screened or not (which I doubt he was), if he was at the top of his crease, playing like the 6 foot 4 goaltender he is, that hits his blocker and is a routine save. Instead he sits back in the net and lets guys pick corners.
Freaking guy comes out to play the puck like he is Nick Lidstrom back there, with his breakout passes, but is against coming out to use his frame to take away the net.
Boggles my mind. Once I heard he was in net, knowing the Caps were going to play desperate coming off a break and 7 loses, I knew we were hooped.

Geez, should Smith be that deep in his net?

It’s situatuonal. When you have the threat of a pass, sometimes you want to be deeper.
When the shot is the only obvious option, you may want to cut down the angle a bit.
So ... no.

The Flames win because of skill. Adding a guy won’t change them into a tough team
We’ve said this team has needed an identity for years. They have one. And more often than not that’s how they win
Don’t try and change that. They need to own what they are and beat teams on that basis

So what we truly need, with this game showing it, is a 1B goalie and another depth defenceman just in case we lose someone like Hamonic.
Something along the lines of Talbot/Howard/ and Polak/Gunnarson/kronwall, and thrown in a Maroon for our fourth line if its a 4th or later

One bright spot I see, is that Jankowski is miles ahead of where Backlund is at his age, and only getting better. I really hope we do not trade him, and lock him in for a long term cost controlled contract next.

Fact is.. he's far to deep in the net. a real goalie comes out there, he sucks period! no debate needed.

And having said that, you could also say the team wins because of the top line, sometimes the second line, a pretty impressive set of 6 D, and sometimes goaltending.
Can you really say the bottom 3 affect the identity positively?
Peters shortens his bench a lot because of who is going and who can’t cut the mustard, right?
Is there not the opportunity for the 4th line to fill 6-8 minutes more effectively?
Wear down some opponents while the stars are catching their breath?
Playoff teams can roll 4 lines, (never equally), but the bottom 6 can certainly have some positive impact, and there is room for improvement here. Getting better minutes from the bottom doesn’t change the top, but it could help. Mangiapane is a non factor and does not contribute significantly to team identity.

But this is a good problem to have. They aren't expensive to solve. We need a 1b goalie, a 4-6 veteran tough D and a 9-12 veteran forward. Things that mid picks and mid range prospects pick up in a saturated market.
