Memphis is right in line for a direct hit, possible tornado hit right through downtown in the next half an hour.

edit: 110 mph shear just west of Memphis, yikes.

Those skies are terrifying. Seriously, they're the kind of skies I see in my nightmares. Any word on the St. Charles, MO area?

That Westboro idiot is planning on 'demonstrating' this weekend when Obama goes to Joplin, and his web site says 'Thank God for the 125 Dead in Joplin' apparently according to this article. I guess he thinks it's a perfect opportunity for publicity. Makes me so sick:

That move might be the nail in the coffin. I can see someone taking him out for that.

My guess is he won't even get to set up before being moved out. The sheer number of present and past armed forces people in this city, the 500+ firefighters, the 500+ police officers etc just isn't going to let it happen. At least I hope so.

You knew this was coming though.

My husband is still down there helping out FEMA and he said there is no way they'd get past the military police. He said it's Marshall Law right now and you have to have a pass to get near anything in 'the war zone' and you have to be approved- I hope there is no way the military will allow them to get close, if he makes it near Joplin in the first place. I just can't see those fine folks being very tolerant of Reverend Phelps and posse.

Makes me feel a little better.

The permits are a good idea but unfortunately with a 6 mile track it is still mostly on the honor system. We had three cars that had no problem getting to an employees house wreckage to go through his stuff today. No one questioned us and in fact we never even saw an officer of any sort in the area we were in. Now it would have been fine as we were pre-cleared last night thanks to a retired Joplin fire department lieutenant but you can still essentially go in and out at will.

But the Phelps will want to be in a high profile area like the Range Line road Home Depot and Walmart site and they won't get anywhere near that. Doubly so with the president in town as the place will also be crawling with secret service and other security personnel. Hopefully the media also shuns them.

edit: Joplin Globe reporting that due to long lines, high demand and growing anger the permit program has been suspended.

I think you'd see a mob scene if that piece of arbage Phelps gets anywhere near Joplin. I can't believe anyone would follow that hated filled a hole. If there is such a thing as Hell I hope Rev Phelps gets his just rewards.

A tragedy such as what has happened in Joplin will unite the community. They will be there as a whole to stop the hate mongering. In fact i'd be proud to join them in that fight if I could. I loath people like Phelps and would love to see him and his hate filled group get their areses kicked..

Checked the NOAA site and so far today they have 72 tornado reports. How bad is it getting? California had tornados today.

Apparently there is a "mass casualty incident" in Bloomington, In. Heard it on wthr.com. I didn't catch who issued the statement, I think it was a Fire Department.

For those who are "in the know" more than I about typical extreme weather activity, I'm curious if you think this means anything or not in terms of weather patterns. Is this just a year where things are bad or is this a trend we are seeing that is gradually getting worse from one year to the next? And if so do you think there are significant contributing factors leading to it or just Mother Nature taking her course so to speak?

It seems like every year when you hear about this stuff on TV it's getting worse and worse but things aren't always as they seem. Obviously the amount of life lost this year is off the charts in comparison to the norm, but it is concerning though when you hear about these tornadoes and it always was a case of one touching down but out in some farmers field where no life was lost, but now we see them charging right through cities and towns.

I see some folks on here from the affected areas, best wishes to all of you.

Funny i am awake right now because of a thunder boomer that just rattled the house.

Just one of those years IMO.

All the conditions have been in place for this to happen. Lots of moisture in the ground, extreme early season heating patterns, a cooling trend in the pacific ocean etc etc.

Right now is the time of year where tornados are pretty common...whats rare about this year is that they started early, there have been WAY more than normal, and they have hit two majorly populated areas which has caused so many more deaths than normal which rightfully so attracts more media attention than usual. As well we have live and real time coverage of these things which is something relatively new and likely pretty good for ratings. Combine all that and we are at where we are at for this year at least.

Im not sure this is the beginning of any long term patterns or anything but more of anomily when all the ingredients came together to cause utter chaos.

I wouldnt say they started early at least here... The Strongest tornado maybe on record ( they said it was stronger than an F5) was May 3, 1999. Last week my wife and I were discussing how we hadnt had any tornado scares in OKC and it almost June , which is odd.
