Sven "Fricken" Bartschi!

I'm pretty sure Brendl just couldn't translate his horrendous amount of cherry picking to an NHL level.

Sven is still learning the NHL way of things, including the system and how to play under Hartley. Watching him last night it seemed that in any shift in the second half, he had a timer counting down in his head. He seemed to be more focused on getting off the ice than having an impact while on it. Looked to me like he had been told "30 second shifts" and in an effort to please the coach, was more focused on that than the play.
Not a big deal, just struck me as something that may be part of the learning curve and as he adjusts and gets more comfort/confident he will go with his instincts more like he did in Junior.

Sven needs to be playing with a veteran NHL centre that can track back when he makes the odd turnover or rookie error. When Sven is on a line with any of our talented skill players he gets exposed because no one is covering for his errors.

I'd say give him the odd shift with Stajan & Iggy, but Tangs is playing very well. We have so much depth on the LW that other guys (Glenny, Cammy) are going to be itching to play there too. The current line up is so unbalanced that I think we may not see the best of Baertschi this season... unless Steve Begin starts channelling his inner Mario Lemieux.

Tanguay had good chemistry with Hudler and Cervenka for the couple of games they played together, so putting Sven with Iginla and Stajan isn't a bad idea. Also, I think playing with a young guy seems to light a bit of a fire under Iggy as he doesn't want to get shown up.

Last year, when Sven scored against San Jose, he was on the ice with Horak and Iginla for that shift and they controlled the play well.

This is the thing, Sven should have had a spot opened for him from the beginning (like Phaneuf) instead he's stuck playing 4th line minutes with various partners. We need to trade a LW for a centre and get this team on track.

From what I've seen in the last couple games he seems to be playing very conservatively: a lot of dumping the puck in, making sure he gets back to the neutral zone at the first sign of a turnover and very short shifts. I wouldn't doubt that Hartley told him to focus on things like that and he has just overcompensated a bit. I'm sure in a few games he will find his groove. It would be nice to see him get some power play time, but with Iginla, Cammalleri, Glencross, Hudler and Stempniak ahead of him on the wings there isn't a lot of opportunity right now.

If he fails it won't be because he's like Brendl - Brendl failed because he actually had horrible hockey sense, was lazy, and the bulk of his WHL goals were "junior quality goals". In other words, the way that he scored goals was never going to translate to the big leagues. Frankly, anyone that watched him closely during his junior career could see it.

Sven won't bust because of poor hockey sense or laziness. In fact I don't think he will bust at all - but if he does, it won't be due to those reasons.

It's a confidence thing too. When players lose their confidence they play a more conservative style of game. They become afraid of mistakes.

The guy needs to have one go in off his arse and then I think we'll see a hot streak.

Exactly. He needs the puck on his stick more. Right now, he is getting maybe 20 or 30 seconds a night. Either give him some PP time or send him to Abby for some.

Could you expand on the term "junior quality goals"? What are those? For me it always seemed like Brendl lacked a good work ethic, something that Sven clearly does not lack.

Brendl had a decent shot, he could certainly pick a corner. I'd say he scored pro calibre goals. But his skating was mediocre and he got a ton of goals by cherry picking which you cannot do at the NHL level unless you're Pavel Bure fast. I remember watching him play on the PK and he'd fly the zone if he thought the Hitmen might win the puck. Laziness, skating, work ethic, dedication, commitment, fitness, etc were all issues with him. Obviously a lot of those are words for the same thing.

Baertschi is a completely different prospect for sure. Hard working, dedicated, eager to learn, etc.

This kid says the right things all the time.

I looked back at the 2011 Draft and Baertschi has the 4th highest PPG out of this draft class. Higher than Couturier and Zabinejad even. I really think we got a Top 5 player at with the #13 pick. Baertschi just keeps on delivering. I think he has a real shot at getting 60-70 points next year and is still eligible for the Calder.

Excited for the future.

I think he is the real deal. He started to produce a lot more when put in the right situations. His start of the season playing 4th line minutes (5 minutes a game) wasn't the best way to start his second go. I thought he was highly effective when he got recalled from the heat and put into a bigger role.

His vision and IQ are too high for him not to succeed... he just needs his body to catch up with him.

Hopefully he can work on his first stride and put on a few pounds of muscle this off-season.

pretty sure he is. he played only 20 games last season < 25 max. and played 5 the year prior < 6 max.

therefore he would still be eligible.
