The other question I have now is if collisions of greater magnitude happen in the Earth's atmosphere all the time, then how is this different? Is it just easier to observe with the machine they built, or is this slightly different?

As you enter the event horizon of the blackhole time relative to the outside world should slow down. So if I was looking at you in the blackhole it would look like time was moving really slowly but to you time would be passing at normal speed.

The poison of religous belief?

But in deeply religious and superstitious India, fears about the experiment and the minor risks associated with it spread rapidly through the media.
In east India, thousands of people rushed to temples to pray and fast while others savoured their favourite foods in anticipation of the world's end.

Not sure if anyone has posted this yet but it's a fantastic thread from the somethingawful forums by a PhD student working on the LHC. He starts with a great post explaining the thing then answers everyone's serious questions.

Trouble at the LHC over the weekend looks like it will push out any collisions until the new year:

Disapointing to say the least, for every day there's a delay, its a delay for the sweet embrace of death.

All I could picture was pure chaos, sparks and flames everywhere, and engineers and scientists running around screaming with high squeaky voices from the 1 ton of helium that had leaked out. Then some head scientist barking out orders to shut down the LHC, but he'd sound like a chipmunk.
