2011 - landed a franchise player in the 4th round in Gaudreau and useful depth pieces in Granlund and Baertschi

2013 - Traded a bunch of guys and had 3 first round picks. Monahan, Poirier and Klimchuk

2014 - picked 4th overall and landed Bennett

2015 - picked up 2 top 4 defensemen in Andersson and Kylington and a top 6 forward in Mangiapane

2016 - picked top ten again and landed a franchise player in Mathew Tkachuk and also picked a franchise defenseman in Adam Fox and top 9 forward in Dube.

You basically are going to be hard pressed to do any better than that.

But in reality:
We moved Ferland before concussions took him out of the league he landed us Noah Hanifan and Elias Lindholm - but his career was over by the time he was 27.

Gaudreau left town as a UFA

Monahan was a #1 center but injuries broke him down to where he was a shell of himself at 26.

Poirier and Klimchuk busted for various reasons.

Kylington is taking this year off due to personal issues.

Adam Fox didn't report.

Matthew Tkachuk left as a free agent.

Jusso Valimaki got a serious knee injury and fell a mile down the depth chart.

You can rebuild and basically nail it - picks that didn't work out like Poirier or Klimchuk are more than made up for by landing Gaudreau, Ferland, Mangiapane and Fox in later rounds - and end up right where we are now.
Also they took lots of shots at developing goalies: Parsons, McDonald, Gillies, Ortio but zero panned out. That hurt them.

All good.

Glad it's cleared up.

And the person I was replying to has been "mock posting" me for months. It's pretty easy to see and I call them on it when I see it. So I was replying "yep" as it is clearly personal for the person in question.

Fail to see what that has to do with the discussion.. but glad you could get that out.

I think 3 is optimistic. 4-5 is the fastest most of the time. But it can certainly take longer.
It can take longer. Flames and others have shown that the timeline can go right when combined hitting on some later-round picks. Can't be expected, but we're still talking about the same amateur scouting group that has had late round success.

Even if the rebuild is in the ~5-yr timeline, I'd argue that the ascension to playoff ready is a better/more exciting on-ice product than a team clinging to 'get in and anything can happen'. Put me in the camp that loved watching the Monahan-led Flames with an exciting prospect in NCAA by the name of Johnny hockey, and not a heck of a lot else. We weren't playoff competitive yet, but it was some great young building blocks to build around and you knew the vision when you walked into the Dome.

Haven't we missed the playoffs in something like 9 of 13 seasons? So even when we've tried to push the chips in, it's failed. Point being...not all non-playoff teams are created equal. Insert a couple of young top prospects into this org and I think a lot of the indifference to this team starts to erode and, dare I say, some optimism starts to build around this franchise.

The attitude is this year only. Everyone was pretty excited last year. Even after Gaudreau and Tkachuk - everyone got excited when they landed Huberdeau, Kadri and Weegar.

Right now people are angry - they aren't indifferent. Indifferent is when you completely suck and have no chance - which is what it takes when to get these young top prospects you want.

Two nice regular seasons in the last 5. I think indifference crept in before last year’s huge resurgence.
