Somebody needs to investigate why Bennett can play like a top center but not here
Anyway, these are actually good things that Treliving did…that’s the problem

Wow Bennett is a top center now?

Even better, Tanev has been playing through extreme pain for two months, far longer than the Flames have been out of the playoff hunt. Just incredible decision making, would love to see how this went down.
Valimaki and Kylington getting scratched so a broken Tanev can skate his brains out for 20 mins every night and propel the team to the 12th overall draft pick.

It doesn't change the fact Macinnis said, verbatim, that the contract he was signing would make him a Flame for life. Except then he went on to another contract and wanted more.
Besides, there still is a net income discrepancy between Canada and a lot of US cities. Calgary would have had to give Stone $11M to make the take home salaries equal.

Already talked about, but what in the flying #### is Tanev doing playing meaningless games with injuries like that?

While the tax thing is factor it is often misunderstood.
Hockey players have all kinds of tools to mediate their taxes, including income deferrals, in kind charitable contributions.
Likewise, players only have to pay local income tax for home games , ie half of their games. The remainder of games are taxed based on their residency.
So yeah its a factor, but a factor that is largely over blown. Besides, they get paid in USD so they're money goes much further in Canada.

Tanev playing through broken ribs and "extreme pain" for two months should be a fireable offense for whoever was responsible.
That can't be allowed to happen. Incredibly reckless.

Holy sensationalism.
Maybe Tanev himself wanted to play? They shut Monahan down when the team was officially eliminated. Logically doesn't make sense that they didn't consider it with Tanev either, but he may have opted to keep playing.
Not saying it's the best decision since I would've preferred to play the kids, but Sutter wanted the vets to keep playing still for a reason, and he's trying to change the culture of the team. So maybe Tanev wanted to do something along with that. He did have the A to round out the last few games after all.

Yeah.
Running Tanev and Monahan for as long as they did…this team’s desire to just sneak into the playoffs is stupid.
What was the hope? To get to run them for more months in a lengthy playoff run? Tanev’s injury was well before the trade deadline, as was Monahan’s. Both players should have been shutdown the rest of the season, and the direction for the remainder of the season should have been altered.
Stupid. Short sighted. What else is new.

I imagine we'll see another off-season of the team doing all they can to scratch and claw back into the playoffs. I struggle to see how they do that without some dramatic changes, and even then I don't have a lot of hope.
This is a rough time to be a Flames fan.
|
Agreed. How can they make meaningful improvements when so many assets have declined in value under this management team?
I just don't see any way this roster gets better, so why not embrace the suck? Seems better than playing your concussed players or those who need surgery.
Such a bizarre franchise.

I was hoping someone would have asked the question of why he played when they knew they were mathematically out of contention and yet Tanev played all remaining games... but alas nobody had the nuts to do it.

Tanev seems like the type of guy that wasn't going to let you shut him down earlier in the season when they were in the thick of things.
But once things became pretty much clear that they wouldn't make it for the last 2-3 weeks...that's just ridiculous.
And as you said him playing any of these last 5 games since they were officially eliminated should be a fireable offence for whoever allowed that in our training staff.

Chris Tanev after his injuries March 29th:

FF% Rel: 12.88
SF%: 62.46%
SF% Rel: 12.12

HDCF%: 68.63%

Absolute. Pure. Dominance.
No idea why he played the final 4 games though.

Yep, it makes this organization look bush league and unprofessional when they play players that are seriously injured. Where is the NHLPA in all of this?
Flames may have even made the playoffs playing their inexperienced healthy players.

With injuries of that magnitude, it really shouldn't matter whether Tanev wanted to play or not. Broken ribs make it very difficult to breathe and the planet is being ravaged by a respiratory illness.
The Flames were already way out of the hunt and they had players like Oliver Kylington and Connor Mackey who could have benefited from more time in the lineup.

Taking a while to get to 5000

You can't let the athlete decide. Of course they are going to play. Markstrom, Monahan, Tanev etc.
They have to be forced out (Monahan eventually).
Scorpion is right.

Is this a joke? every team has injured players...broken ribs are not a concussion. I guarantee you there are a ton of injured players playing right now.

That's cool, and I don't necessarily disagree with you that he maybe should've been shut down once Flames were mathemtically eliminated, but I think it's naïve to think Tanev didn't want to play himself, and they played him against his will. So firing anyone for this is dramatic.
Considering the injury he had when games didn't matter anymore, it's seems pretty obvious that he wanted to finish the season out even if he has a bad injurty.
