Oh come on, it’s clearly a case of drunken shenanigans gone awry. Most of us have done worse without incident. The only reason we are hearing about this is because the security guard knew who he was and obviously saw dollar signs as soon as the incident happened. Dumb move on his part but to be expected for anyone in their early twenties. Please spare us the sanctimony.
You’ve got to be trolling.
1. No, most of us haven’t done worse, even when drunk. Why would you make that assumption?
2. How could your first response to a victim’s testimony be a baseless conjecture of greed and malicious intention? That’s called victim blaming. I’d be scared if a group of drunk idiots came at my car door at 2am, PTSD or not. Now to be fair, I get spooked in broad daylight if someone honks at me from their car while I’m driving, so I’m probably not the best standard to measure against. But I’m still willing to wager most other people would be frightened as well.
3. It’s expected for 20 year olds to gather in a group and harass someone at 2am and then proceed to pull down his pants in public? How low of an opinion do you have of 20 year olds to think this is within an acceptable range of “drunken shenanigans?”

Very sad that he and his friends did something like this.
He'll probably get away scot free in the end. Might have to pay up in a civil suit, but that'll be it.
If you or your friends have not been involved in similar shenanigans, then you clearly had a boring time in your prime partying years. Most (normal) people have been in similar or worse incidents. Keep in mind that there was no fight, nor a physical altercation. The worst that happened is that someone was scared and saw some bare ass.
In no way am I suggesting that Matthews be absolved of blame here, it was a stupid act and he should take responsibility for it. However, the pious cliches being espoused by Jiri and others are over the top and tiresome.

Thank god you're not my friend. I had a blast with my friends partying 15-30+.
and never attempted to assault a woman.

Not surprising in the least that the most "red meat big dick old school man Herr" posters on the OT forum are trying to handwave young men trying to break into a woman's occupied car at 2 AM.

Putting the fear of god into a woman at 2am when you’re with a group of men is beyond shenanigans. To be clear, doing this to a woman is designed to elicit fear because she may be robbed, raped or worse. It’s especially bad because it took place in the US. It’s even worse if this woman is a minority, given the fact they’re in Arizona, which isn’t exactly known for being friendly to non white people.
Showing her his boxers is probably minor all things considered. But even that is closer to unwanted sexual advances than I’m comfortable with.
I think the reaction would be way more forgiving if he’d got caught doing a normal college age prank. Like killing the ROTC Commander’s horse.

Look at you, whining about "tiresome" posts. You're the victim here, aren't you?

Can someone shed some light in what kind of "paperwork" are the guards supposed to do while on duty and is it ok to do it in their cars? Aren't they supposed to do a paperwork after the shift? Frankly, I am not buying "paperwork" argument and tend to think that she was sleeping on the job. Otherwise she would not be "startlet" by a loud company of men.
I am also not sure if Matthews actually told her he thought it was funny. For all we know, he told her that she is sleeping on her job and he is not happy about it.

Wow, some of this #### is nuts.
Although a few people bizarrely thanked you for declaring you never assaulted anyone, (and good on you I guess, but that bar is too low for thanking and pretty much irrelevant ...) ... you do realize that nobody in this story assaulted anyone.
Cecil, you think Matthews and his pals “designed their actions” to put the fear of god in this lady so she would think she was going to be robbed, raped or worse? That was their intent?
####ing really?

Obviously, the kid does not deserve to be crucified but for so many to chalk this up as harmless fun is disturbing, especially given that the guard is female.
Auston Matthews should be held to a higher standard than the average 21 year old idiot. Most importantly HE should hold himself to a higher standard.
Kids are watching his every move.

Ii just read the article in The Athletic that goes into more detail. Sounds like Matthews' dad is a pompous prick and to be honest I always thought he came across as that.
This quote seems damning as well "Dozithee also said that a member of the condo board approached her after the incident and told her that if she decided to press charges, the board would support her, because “the resident has been an issue for us anyways.”
So it's clearly not a one-time thing and him and his buddies can't control themselves and act like adults.
Plus him and his dad don't day anything to the Leafs and try and keep it a secret. Very dishonest and scheming.
No way I want him being captain of the Leafs now.
Give Tavares the C.

Another sidetrack to all this....anyone else notice that Bob Mckenzie, Elliott Friedman and Pierre Lebrun (the big 3 of reporting in my opinion; not including Dreger but i guess this goes for him too) are conspicuously silent about all this other than retweeting the house articles? They have a cozy symbiotic relationship with agents and probably fear pissing off that source of "insider" news. Mckenzie has the least to lose (retiring after this year), so i hope he comes out with something on this soon.

Trying to get into a woman’s car at 2am, even if she is a security guard, is some seriously terrifying s**t. Women walk around constantly with the burden of being responsible for their own safety, especially late at night, which is something that Matthews, and a lot of men, have clearly never experienced.
It’s clear from Matthews’ actions after the incident that he has no idea how troubling this is or that he cares to learn. Per the incident report, after the security officer explained to Matthews how intimidating his behavior was, he then mooned her, dismissing her fear in the most juvenile way possible.
While no one is condoning what Matthews did, far too many people are willing to handwave his behavior away, as if empathy for women is trait that men will eventually grow into, and not something that should be expected of them at the tender age of 22.
Being “a drunk idiot”, is not a defense. Nor is “I was trying to be funny,” since a woman has no way of knowing someone else’s intentions. The statistics of sexual assault in America are appalling, with one in six American women reporting they’ve been the victim of rape or attempted rape.
These are the men we are trying to shield ourselves from. When women complain that this kind of behavior– that this drunk pack of roaming guys who think it’s “funny” to try to barge into someone’s work vehicle at 2 a.m. — is what scares us, please, please listen.

They do paperwork during down times in their shift.
Trying to justify things and say "I think she was asleep" a bunch of men acting like or trying to break into a woman's car at 2 am is not only stupid but pretty terrifying for the woman.
This sounds a lot like the start of the Jerry Macquire movie where he defends his client by pointing out that he's a great football player.
I can't justify his actions with a boys will be boys shrug of my shoulders.
At the end of the day, this is a pretty minor charge and he should apologize and make a deal to put it behind him.
