Again, you already connected the dot that Aho was trying to move at the last moment changing the position of his upper body. That is what (incidentally) brought his head into contact the way it was.
You don't need to conceded his head doesn't come into contact because it does as part of the sequence.
Your error is in your inability to grasp it's as a result of Aho's movement and decision making on the play.
It's 2018, man. You can't hit people in the head, even if they dodge. If you try and get out of the way of a high stick and still get hit, it's still high sticking. Most kneeing penalties are the result of someone attempting to get out of the way, and then the offending player makes an unfortunate/malicious adjustment. It doesn't mean they're not penalties. Dodging does not nullify the infraction. That's absurd.
Aho has no regard for his own safety on that play. He pays a price. Gio doesn't intend to hit him in the head, yet he does. He deserves to be ejected. He was ejected.
The puck over the glass is an automatic penalty. I have no issues with head contact being penalized the same way, especially when it was as violent an impact as this one.
I don't think Gio is a dirty player, I don't think he intended to cause Aho any real harm. I think the play unfolded the way it did, and the appropriate punishment has already been assessed.

Yes it does, so not absurd at all.
The wrong call was made on the match penalty yesterday. As evidenced by not even a hearing for supplemental discipline and i guarantee we see that penalty rescinded at some point.

Not that absurd.
Rule 48 – Illegal Check to the Head
48.1 Illegal Check to the Head – A hit resulting in contact with an
opponent’s head where the head was the main point of contact and
such contact to the head was avoidable is not permitted.
In determining whether contact with an opponent's head was
avoidable, the circumstances of the hit including the following shall be
considered:
(i) Whether the player attempted to hit squarely through the
opponent’s body and the head was not "picked" as a result of poor
timing, poor angle of approach, or unnecessary extension of the
body upward or outward.
(ii) Whether the opponent put himself in a vulnerable position by
assuming a posture that made head contact on an otherwise full
body check unavoidable.
(iii) Whether the opponent materially changed the position of his body
or head immediately prior to or simultaneously with the hit in a way
that significantly contributed to the head contact.
48.2 Minor Penalty – For violation of this rule, a minor penalty shall be
assessed.
48.3 Major Penalty – There is no provision for a major penalty for this rule.
48.4 Game Misconduct Penalty – There is no provision for a game
misconduct for this rule.
48.5 Match Penalty – The Referee, at his discretion, may assess a match
penalty if, in his judgment, the player attempted to or deliberately
injured his opponent with an illegal check to the head.
If deemed appropriate, supplementary discipline can be applied by
the Commissioner at his discretion.

There are going to be some pretty upset folks in this thread with the lack of suspension.
Maybe you guys could write to DOPS and lobby them to suspend Gio for standing planted and not letting Aho dangle into the slot unmolested. What a tyrant Gio is.

Thats the sign of a good leader!

My takeaway from this hit is how awesome Justin Williams is. Doesn't hesitate to fight Gio (seems like a bad idea to me), holds his own (kind of)... then later in the game looks mad as hell when the Canes score one: https://streamable.com/ab5ul
For the sake of hockey thank god that wasn't a suspension, as harsh as it sounds Aho has himself to blame for that injury. This is the best league in the world, everyone knows you are playing with fire if you have your head down while making a play in front of the net. Sucks that he got hurt but that's hockey.
Always tough to judge a guy based on changing standards, but one of the dirtiest hitters in league history by today's standards. He hit not just to hurt, but to concuss.
Where am I? i thought this was a Flames message board?
As the NHL demonstrated, and as Carolina's own coach said, it was an unfortunate incident, that Gio was penalized on.
No further action was taken because the hit wasn't a targeting incident...not even capable of meeting the very, very low bar of NHL supplemental discipline.
Seems like some folks can't admit their interpretation of the hit was incorrect, especially the point that many people were trying to make: Gio is entitled to keep on his trajectory, he kept his elbow and shoulder down and he did not jump or leap or otherwise try to initiate contact explicitly to Aho's head.
he was penalized on the play and that level of discipline was deemed sufficient in the eyes of the NHL.
