I'm surprised no one is talking about how Treliving did NOT give Hartley a vote of confidence. He did not guarantee he would be back.

which is probably the smart thing to do. Certainly possible that one or two interesting coaches become available and Treliving would be interested. Giving Hartley a vote of confidence now but hiring another guy a month later would look bad on Treliving.

Flip side is he does and then people go "oh no, the dreaded "vote of confidence" from the GM. Hartley's as good as gone!"
It's a no win.

True, but, in addition to mentioning the horrific special teams stats, Treliving did comment on the Flames style of play and how he wanted it changed. I found that interesting, because I'm sure he didn't just come up with that yesterday. So, three options come to mind;
1) Hartley and Treliving agreed not to change systems and styles this season;
2) Hartley doesn't want to change style/system or;
3) They feel they didn't have the personnel to play Treliving's desired style/system.
I'm not suggesting Hartley will be let go but, after listening to that interview, I'm not going to be surprised if he is.

If there's one thing we know about Treliving, is that he doesn't comb a hair on his head without considering everything before putting comb to head.
Like he said yesterday, they've just begun the evaluation process (evrything in life is a process with Brad) for the coaches. I'm sure he'll eventually come to a conclusion, just not when his knee jerks.
I don't believe they'll move from Hartley yet, he gets a bit more time but will be on a short leash. The real evaluation will be on the assistant coaches IMO.

Or, a slight variant of 1), Hartley and Treliving agree that the system and styles will be altered for the upcoming season.
But, I agree with you that it is interesting that Treliving mentioned specfically the poor special teams and the desire for a change of systems without mentioning the coach at all. He could have easily said "Bob and I have talked about the season and plan to adapt for next year". But, by leaving the coach out of the comment, he can keep Hartley or replace him if someone better becomes available.
All that being said, I'd like to see Hartley back for next season. He seems to really know how to mold young players, in my opinion. I do wish he would use #93 in a more prominent role though.

Objection: Treliving's hair isn't long enough to comb. If it were any shorter, he would have indents in his scalp.

Which tells you a lot about Treliving's thinking if he has to strategize to comb those lack of locks.

Celebrated Square Root Day

My feeling is I wouldn't be surprised if Hartley is back but also wouldn't be surprised if I open CP to a "Bob Hartley fired" thread one day this summer. Brad (and assumedly everyone in the organization) were displeased with special teams, and without getting into the rumors too much, there's some evidence of players really not liking him.
Which normally may not mean too much, but when you consider two of the bigger stars our franchise have seen are negotiating large deals to make themselves Flames for years, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the coaching may be a "consideration" in negotiation.
Mix that with Brad being the type to leave no stone unturned and maybe not "wanting" to get rid of Hartley but seeing an option come up this summer and going "yeah, not passing up on that guy", and it wouldn't surprise me if he's gone.

I'd bet money that if the Flames aren't in a playoff position by Thanksgivimg, Hartley and his staff are toast.

But Hartley also said him and Trevy are like partners and that Hartley did what's in the best interest of the organization, which not a lot of coaches are willing to do. If Hartley was only protecting his job, things would've been different:
1) Raymond wouldn't have made the team out of camp over Byron
2) Ortio wouldve been lost on waivers
3) Hamilton would've probably been scratched early on
4) Hiller and Backstrom wouldn't have gotten all those starts at the end
Keep in mind Hartley is not a micromanager. Gelinas is being groomed and was given fre reign of the special teams, good or bad. So when your a company man and a team player, then your less likely to be thrown under the bus.

Did Hartley say Gelinas had free reign? That's not normally how it works and I don't remember hearing that...

I didn't here the presser with Treliving, did someone in the media ask him if Hartley would be back, and he was non commital? Or did it simply not come up?
If it's the latter, then this "Treliving didn't give the vote of confidence" stuff is made up. Of course he didn't, Hartley still has a contract next year. GMs don't usually go out and highlight that coaches under contract will be back, they simply don't say anything. Sometimes they might say things are being evaluated if they are truly thinking about a coaching move, but you don't come out and say anything about your coach if you aren't thinking of firing him before the start of next season, you just say nothing.

Millions asked and Treliving said everyone including management needed to be reviewed

Well that's nothing more than a canned, we hold ourselves accountable from Burke to the fitness coach comment, but fair enough.

I think the special teams really turned the corner late in the season.
PK: Seemed much better when the players were let off the leash to try and attack while on the PK. We scored and it seemed to cause opponents a moment of pause coming up the ice.
PP: The Hamilton to first unit move was terrific. Completely different unit out there than when Wideman was in the spot.
