Giordano agreeing to less than $7M a year another example why he's one of the best leaders in the game. Willing to sacrifice to win. #Flames
Maybe a poor choice of words. He is being generous if he left money on the table, but not really a sacrifice.
I was hoping/expecting a 5 year contract at $7million per. This is right in there and I am sure Gio's camp negotiated hard for term. What I like about the contract is that it does not require the salary cap to go up for it to make sense. It is a fair AAV today.
If Gio plays like last year AND stays healthy, he will be a steal.

This is a fair deal for both sides, and really sets the team up nicely going forward.
It's a nice compromise, giving Gio 6 years of security to keep it under $7M. And while 'late bloomer' doesn't mean anything, it is definitely valid to say that, because of injuries and lack of playoffs, he has really low miles on his odometer so far. Being signed to 38 has less risk as a result, IMO (and is the price you pay to keep the AAV at a good level).
Having Giordano, Brodie and Hamilton signed for the next 5 years at just over $17M is absolutely beautiful. Over the next 3 years, some combination of Wotherspoon, Morrison, Hickey, Kylington and Andersson will replace the other guys with ELCs or 2nd contracts.
The Flames will have an excellent defense, at a reasonable price, for the foreseeable future. That sure makes managing the team a lot easier.
And no, this does not mean Russell is gone (unless a kid makes him expendable before he is re-signed, which I doubt)

I'm okay with the contract. But I think it's a case of the Flames paying a bit of a premium to keep their captain, rather than Gio taking some kind of discount.

It could be argued Buffalo is still rebuilding and Florida is operating under an internal cap. But I'll give you those two, and maybe Colorado and the Islanders. So I'd say there were maybe three or four teams who would have been in on Gio as a UFA. And those are all franchises that are pretty tight with their money these days. Maybe someone like the Islanders would have gone all in. But I don't they would have offered 7 years at $8 mil or anything crazy like that.
I'm glad Gio is staying. But I don't think he had anywhere near the options some fans think. Teams these days don't go throwing around six year deals at $7 mil+ to 32-year-old UFAs.

Were you looking at cap space for this coming season, or the next season when Gio would be UFA? Quickly looking at 2016-17 for a bunch of teams that you mentioned, looks like they could have space.

You are the only poster who feels this way. You can't even find a poster on HF boards as delusional as you are in regards to this contract..
Coming from a fan who's team paid 7mil a year for Phaneuf! HAHAHAHA

A lot of this just isn't true. You know that teams will have expiring deals after this season right? Toronto will have Horton on the IR, which gives them close to 8 million this season. Not to mention arcobello, spaling, parenteau, and polak all coming off the books.
Colorado has an internal cap? This is news to me.
Edmonton sees nikitin, Purcell, and Schultz all expire next season. That's like 13 million right there.
The point being that many teams would find a way to make it work and there would have been multiple teams bidding for his service. The flames are in no way paying a premium on this deal.
It does not matter if half the teams would offer him a longer term extension at more $... it only takes one team to offer him that as a free agent. And you can be sure that there is one team out there that thinks that Gio is worth this much or significantly more.... just look at how many CP posters are saying this is a terrific deal. So, if we want him we had to pay this much, and I think it is a good deal!!
Exactly. Free agency isn't some sort of average or co-op. It doesn't matter how many teams would be interested because it is defined by the highest bidder.
Giordano would easily get 5 x $8M IMO.
And if so, that essentially means that the Flames are getting one free season.
Giordano has accepted less than open market money in order to have security with his team, while helping give them a chance to win.

I think the next 3-5 years will be the true testament to just how good the Flames' management team is. So far so good, but the hard work is just beginning.
Drafting, developing and signing those players is always a huge part of the franchise plan. With the cap how do you keep that "window" open?
Glen Sather just throws gobs of money at players to assemble competetive teams, but it handcuffs the franchise. Edmonton's only hope is to draft and develop well to capitalize on them before they sign their big contracts, because to fill out the roster they have to throw gobs of money at average players to get them to play there.
Chicago is seemingly the gold standard. Just when you think they are approaching cap hell, they keep on winning. LA was on the cusp of that standard, but now they have cap issues. Its just so tough to do.
It seems the formula is to have great coaching, truly elite talent to make up your core, later round draft picks that turn into something and UFA vets on decent contracts to fill out the roster and a drafting and development factory so that the cupboard is always stocked. Piece of cake.
If I see a future issue with the Flames roster it is that there is a lot of really good players that either are on long term contracts making big money, or will be soon demanding long term contracts with big money.
My head says Hudler, Wideman, Jones are all but gone. Russell will have the choice to stay if he is willing to accept less money and a smaller roll.
Ferland is the xfactor at forward, if he can realize his potential and be a good player that can play in the top six, that fills a big hole. If he fritters away, then there is a rather gaping hole in the top six.
These are mostly my random musings. It is amazing how we have gone from discussing years of rebuilding to talking about a potential "window" that is fast approaching. Whatever happens I think the team is in great hands.
