They're sitting at the keg doing play by play from their cell phones while watching the broadcast. At least that would explain why there was always a wierd time delay to make up for the announcers....

I think the idea is to prevent players from using shiny metallic tape and flashing it in their opponents’ eyes. I seem to remember Gretzky doing something like that with an aluminum stick shaft at one point.
