I've often wondered how many CPers or lurkers have seen me ripping around town before. Especially when I was in Calgary for the Stampede.

Well a lot of that unnecessary crap is probably safety related if you are comparing it to an older car.
But I recall reading about how cars since the sixties have been essentially using the same amount of gas as they are today. Engines have gotten significantly more fuel efficient, but cars are heavier and the engines in them have gotten bigger.

I'm not necessarily talking about safety features (although I think the 5000 airbags these days is a little overkill).
I'm talking about the stuff that is turning cars into a media room....the Navs, bluetooth gadgets, power everything, tv screens in seats, 300 buttons to control temperature etc....throw in an automatic transmission and you're basically steering a lazy-boy. All this stuff takes away from the act of driving which I think is the funnest part. All this stuff has potential to be unsafe as well (the more stuff you have to distract you, the less time you have to pay attention to the giant real life movie outside of your windshield).

Bluetooth is a nice feature to have, now I'm not fumbling for my phone instead of driving.

They are all nice features.....just that they take away from the pure pleasure of driving imo.

No, engines are far more efficient these days and cars are lighter. In the sixties most cars were 350 + cid. ( 5.7 lit.) Cars were bigger stronger and far more powerful than full size P/U trucks today.
Gas millage started dropping when pollution control started. The exhaust is so restrictive for pollution control, the engines can't breath. I believe the old gas with lead in it had more energy in it.

No one cares nearly as much about your car, as you do.

I've owned a couple pure pleasure of driving cars before, they lose their pure driving lustre after a couple weeks. You quickly realize the creature comforts are nice to have and hard to live without. Especially if the car is your daily driver.

I guess that's the thing, I've never had a daily driver. I'm usually chauffeured around by a civil servant, so the act of driving is almost always for fun.

This is true. I have one, and more often than not, I'll opt for my Jeep. Its just easier and more comfortable.

My face is a bum!

Of all the modernization that has happened with cars throttle by wire is by far my most hated.
Computers are fast now, why does it never feel like it when they are controlling my throttle????

I almost added just ask Locke at the end of my post. It also helps when your car can idle smoothly at a light

But then you have to go with a milder cam, and thats just no fun!
Although, I did work that particular issue out this year, I eventually got fed up and canned the entire carb and started with a new one. No fun.
