Go general, about and it should have a carrier version (ie Rogers 8.0). What does it say? If it prompts for an update hit yes

There we go, I think thats my mistake. I believe its unlimited browsing. I will check into it.

Get 4.2 without having to wait for an official release:

So who wants to give it a go? No jailbreak necessary. I'm contemplating it.

Uh - how do you enable AirPlay? Does that button only appear when there's an airplay device handy?
ETA: Yup, airplay doesn't show up unless the iPhone detects an AirPlay-compatible device. Nice.

One of the leaked exploits apparently is patched on new iOS devices going out. new redsn0w should be out tomorrow they say. Sounds like it is going to be a Cydia package (no more restore), so that should be awesome.

So I'm looking to unlock my iPhone 3G for a trip overseas in March. I have read a little bit about jailbreaking and then unlocking, but I'm a bit concerned that my old 3G might not be able to handle running custom firmware. As other 3G users know, it isn't exactly an example of a high performance device anymore.
Rogers/Fido offer unlocking "legitimately" for $50 as long as you have paid off enough of your phone that it is no longer subsidized under you plan. I am at 2 of 3 years, and apparently I'm eligible. Because of a mix up with my IMEI number in their database, they need to make a change on my file that will prevent unlocking for 30 days. Not sure why, but I really don't care as I have over 30 days before I go.
As I was ending the call, she suggested looking around "for other options" that don't involve Rogers. I told her that I was aware of the "other methods" and I'd have a look. I was honestly content to pay $50 for the ability to drop a foreign SIM in there. Roaming rates are so atrocious that the $50 would pay for itself easily if I simply made a few quick calls. Plus, I wouldn't have to screw around with jailbreaking and that sort of thing.
So - what's plan B? Will my 3G survive a jailbreak? Will it run any slower? I can tolerate it for now, but any slower would make me go insane. Is unlocking easy after it is jailbroken? Can I revert back to the official firmware at any time? Are there any implications to consider with Apple or Rogers?

Yes, 3G will survive a jailbreak. If you don't install anything other then the unlock it won't run slower. It's not a custom firmware- it's Apple's just opened up for root access.
If you were running a 3GS or a 4 i'd say get the official unlock, but since the iPhone 3G has reached the end of its update cycle the unlock is for life, as is the jailbreak.
No implications with Rogers/Apple, other then warranty, which is expired anyway. Jailbreakers can rever to official firmware at any time.
It is impossible to "brick" a phone by jailbreaking.
Also, what firmware is your iPhone 3G currently on?

I have 4.2.1 on there right now. The performance has improved since 4.0 nearly made me get violent with it.
So, if I'm reading this correctly, jailbreaking it will make it run/look/feel exactly the same but opens up the ability to install non-official apps/features? And the only one of those that I should really concern myself with is the unlocking one?
I could honestly care less about doing anything else fancy with it, and as long as I can drop a European SIM in there so I don't get gouged on roaming, I'll be a happy boy. And, of course, as long as I can still do everything that I do with it now without a performance hit.

You can keep moaning if you want. The 3G is the 2G with a 3G radio in it. No other differences.

Didn't realize that. Moaning recommencing... In all honesty, I think that I'll be able to "survive" another 6 months with my 3G. Post 4.0, not so much, but to Apple's credit they have made it usable again with subsequent updates. And rightfully so.

So the reason that the 2G got left in the dust with software updates was because they wanted you to buy a new phone and nothing else. Good to know.
