I like Singh a lot, too. But he's still learning on the job, and like everyone, sometimes he makes mistakes.

I think the evidence shows that his pronunciation of Kadri is a mistake. Not an important one, but I understand why some people find it jarring.

He just needs time and space, right?

You're right. Singh is only 9 games in, but he isn't earning 10.5, so there's that.

Apparently, Kadri is a name in India - although it’s not super common from what I can tell. It does appear to be pronounced quite similarly to how Singh pronounces it. Not sure it is overly relevant but may have something to do with why he says it the way he does.

That makes sense.

Some of the common Muslim names in India and Pakistan are taken from Arabic, but of course they pronounce them in their own way. This happens in many places.

Robert A. Heinlein once told a story about a visit he made to Chile. He wanted to leave a tip for the housekeeper at his hotel, and asked the desk clerk her name

‘Oh, that's Mrs. Hoan-Ace,’ said the clerk.

‘Mrs. Who?’

‘Hoan-Ace.’

‘Uh, how do you spell that?’

‘J-O-N-E-S.’

‘Oh.’

I don't know if the Indian name Kadri comes from Arabic or not, but even if so, pronouncing the Arabic name ‘Kah-dh-rrrrree’ is a bit like pronouncing Jones ‘Hoan-Ace’.

Well it says the language is Kannada, so that makes it officially correct.

When I noticed Singh say it I found it jarring. Then I thought, oh its Singh, I forgot it was him doing the PBP, which is a high compliment, then when I remembered I figured it was a neat cultural thing or something, then forgot about it.

Finally, this thread has exposed a bunch of the diverse backgrounds of people here. I think that it is pretty cool that we can interact on a regular basis and hate and fight with each other based on our expressed ideas, regardless of our ethnic backgrounds. I kid, but I think it is a big part of the Canadian experience. I have been struck at times while waiting in a large group, like at the airport or a food court downtown, how many people of different backgrounds just kind of coexist without anyone giving a #### about where the person beside them in line is from. This is a "proud to be Canadian moment" and is not intended to diminish the daily lived experience of people that may still experience racism on a daily basis. It does give me hope, though.

The issue is not whether or not Singh is pronouncing it "correctly" but the fact that most people butcher just about every name and no one bats an eye, why is it such a big deal if Singh does it?

Because the way most media people say Kadri's name is the way the Canadian Kadris have accepted their name to be pronounced. It is a close enough approximation to the arabic pronunciation. That should be respected.

Hell, Harnarayan Singh doesn't even pronounce his own name in a Punjabi accent on TV.

There's no Z or V in Hangul, so closest woud be Sado(l/r)ob.

I know not everyone on here is a Flames fan, but most are, but let's not start sounding Oilers fans who were putting together petitions to have Jack Michaels do all the Oilers games in the Playoffs and were ready to take it to Sportsnet headquarters because a commentator a hundred feet away from the ice mattered more than the actual product on the ice, Mike Smith would have stopped that puck if Michaels was calling the game! LOL. I know commentators are a big part of the game, case in point Bob Cole and his legendary calls but if folks' enjoyment of cheering on their favorite team is starting to be ruined by the way a commentator is pronouncing someone's name then maybe watching on mute with music on may be the way to go or like my neighbor does he slows the game down enough to line up with the Fan960 and listens to Wills / Loubo on his smart speaker while watching the game.

Just enjoy the game on the ice and don't let commentators, Ron MacLean types, Cassie's of the world ruin the sport for you.

Sorry all I was off my rocker when this thread initially started

Agreed that the lebanese / arabic way of saying it wouldn't exactly be Harnarayan's. #drunkpuck.com

I don't think Singh's Punjabi background has anything to do with it. He's trying to pronounce Kadri's name how he thinks it is properly pronounced as a Lebanese name. But that's not really important. He should pronounce it like Kadri wants. and if he's working the Calgary beat he should have asked. Really, how many Calgary guys is he going to need to ask? How many have questions around pronunciation? Mangiapane, Lucic, Ruzicka, Vladar?
