I don't like the play of Jon Gillies. For some reason, he looks like a 3 year old kid in 6,6 feet body. His movement makes me feel uncomfortable. I hope he can manage his giant body at some point, but for me it seems he is struggling with that. Last night we could compare his style to smiliar body type of Bishop and I bet we all seen the difference. Rittich looked more composed. His play drop down when Smith injured, which is unfortunate. I watched them both closesly last year when they were at Stockton and Rittich was better. I hope 2 bad games against hot teams did not kill his shot at NHL career after season and half of hard work and great play.

I'm not sure if you watched the game, but the Flames were far from lackluster.
I get that teams look like they are playing well when the puck finds the back of the net, but you really need to look a bit beyond that.

For a guy that no one would even give up a 7th round pick for, and was available for free on waivers, he looked just as advertised.
Which was, as you say, absolutely awful.

Random thoughts:
- Flames played well, Bishop played weller
- Stewart didn't hurt the team but there was a noticeable jump in the top line when Bennett joined them
- They shouldn't have demoted Mangiapane. Could use a quick LW against the Avs

His stats in any other league, and his limited time under any other NHL coach correlates with your opinion.

Stewart didn't look good on the first line, but it was also tough for those guys to get in a rhythm because of all the penalties from both sides

had to watch it later and it was just one of those games. 9 out of 10 times you win those. They play the same way against the Aves tonight, it will be a more favorable result.

the fruitless 5 - 3 for 1:55 doomed them.

I agree on Gillies, something about the way he moves does not seem right. I also think he is slow, very slow to react and the big frame saves him from being slightly out of position. Having never really watched him I don't know if this is what he does or he still needs a few adjustments to the NHL game.
I am not down on him or anything just that his play is not overly encouraging to me at this point.

Gillies is still raw but he'll come around. Everything he seemingly has issues with is correctable/teachable. My only real complaint is how when he thinks its in his pads he swings his legs out and winds up facing away from his net. If its not in his pads he's way out of position and can't recover.

I thought Jon Gillies played well again- don't get the derision. He messed up on the first goal but had the pass been there he would have made a spectacular save. Shore played it well and our defense was inexplicably non-existent. The preformance gillies put in last night could net us a win on any given night. Bishop was just better.
However, the lack of scoring depth was again obvious last night and continues to hurt the team. Also some boneheaded penalties from players getting easily frustrated. Brodie had a terrible night defensively.

I agree with this. The time missed with the hip injury really put him behind in terms of development. But you can see the tools and the skills are there.
Most young goalies look like Bambi.

Perhaps, just perhaps, if the Flames had let Bennett just develop his offence side a little more with say Backlund? he would be further ahead. Instead they obsessed with trying to make him a centre while playing him with AHL quality linemates. No wonder he's such a mess

Yes. They were obsessed with playing a center at center. And yes, Flames had/have zero scoring beyond 2 lines.

Gillies put up a .923 save %, and he looked good. He got beat twice, and that happens - but this really is a "3-2" league. I'd say Gillies, in his starts, has looked excellent.
In 3 starts, Gillies is rocking a .946 save percentage, is 2-1-0, and holds a 1.67GAA with only 5 goals against.
I think one of my favourite moments for Gillies was last night after the game. He spoke directly to the fact that he lost the goaltending battle. That's awesome. No fluff, no nothing - he views games as 1 v 1 battle between himself and the opponent's goaltender. I love that mindset. No excuses, it's just a simple task of being better than the guy at the other end of the rink.
I'm a huge Gillies fan, and what he's done so far this year is definitely giving me hope for what he'll be moving forward.
2017/2018 Starts:
2-1-0
.946 Save %
1.67 GAA
2016/2017 Starts:
1-0-0
.964 Save %
1.00 GAA
That's about a pretty damn impressive first 4 starts. Awesome.

Fair enough, but thats really small sampe size and those teams are not the top teams maybe except Dallas. Rittich was sporting similar numbers after 3 starts. If Gillies started in Vegas instead of Yotes, this could have been different story. I am a fan of Rittich and i feel like we will be loosing him after this season. If Gillies is prefered, Rittich will probably leave to KHL. I dont think he wants to sign another 2-way deal.

I like Gillies as well. But he needs to cure the "one bad goal per game" thing. He needs some practice in puckhandling and knowing where the rebounds are going. I think he tracks the puck generally pretty well, and of course is huge (he should learn from what Bishop did last night).
