Default Short term investments

I have some money that I want to put away for the next 8 - 10 months...

Anyone know of any short term investments (GIC, etc.) that pay good interest? I am going to be needing the money for the down payment on my home next spring so I am looking for something stable with no risk...

Manulife Bank is offering 4% on any balance, with minimal fees. I have our condo accounts set up there and it's been good so far.

With the meltdown in markets lately, these high interest accounts are seen as less risky than money market funds.

You really only have a couple of choices for 8-10 month money; GIC's or High Interest Accounts. Basically anything else is built for the longer term or some more risk.

I would do the high interest account though...better interest and totally liquid.

the Asset-Backed Commercial Paper market is short term (usually 30,60,90 day notes) however these have recently taken a beating and aren't as secured as a high interest account.

RBC has a high interest account as well with no minimum balance.

TD Waterhouse offered 4.56% on a 6 month GIC if you are interested in something like that.

However as someone noted it is "locked in" so you can't touch it till that 6 months is up.

ok say you have $10,000. Invest it in a GIC for 6 months and make $500. or you could go out and buy $10,000 worth of Pot (maybe 5lbs) turn around and sell it in 6 months by the ounce. You've doubled your money .
