I don't even think it's projection with Trump. He is so transactional in nature he doesn't consider what was said or planned in the past or what the repercussions are for the future. He just stumbles from one issue to the next in a bubble with his only concern is "winning" in the very short term.
If he was a chess player he would never sacrifice a pawn to win the game because each pawn is a game unto itself. He would declare victory after he captures his opponents pawn and then flip over the board after he is checkmated. I guess that's what they mean by 4D chess.
There is no capacity for big picture, long term planning. A lot of people are like this and they tend to have very difficult lives. Trump was fortunately born very wealthy and in a system that values wealth and celebrity above all, so he's been rescued over and over again and stumbled his way to the most important job in the world, instead of living behind some dumpster huffing paint fumes and selling $5 blowjobs.
