They were talking about having them play the last game this season.

I can't see Reschny or Wyttenbach signing this year. They both just had their first season of NCAA hockey. Let them develop for another year, build strength and confidence. There is zero reason to rush at this point in my mind.

The 50-contract limit is going to make things interesting for Calgary to manage.
If I had to guess, I could see Wiebe, Castagna, and Gross (who I assume Calgary ends up landing) all getting a game at some point this year. Wyttenbach and Reschny feel a bit more like next-season guys to me, if they sign at all. I do wonder if another year of Div 1 might make more sense for them, but I haven’t watched enough of either to really judge that.
The bigger question is what Calgary does if both Wyttenbach and Reschny want to sign. How is that usually handled with first-year players when contract slots are tight?
Do teams ever push players like Wiebe or Castagna toward AHL deals to save NHL contract spots? I’m assuming Gross would only come over on an NHL deal.
Also curious about the mechanics when a team signs a college player and immediately puts him into the NHL lineup. Does that count as a call-up against the roster limit, or is it treated differently?

There is no roster limit after the trade deadline and since the player is going directly from college to the NHL, he doesn't count as an AHL call-up.

And still don't see a concern with the 50 contract limit. How many college players do you think the Flames are going to ink in the next five weeks? The Flames have five weeks of hockey left. The Wranglers have two and a half weeks left. Neither team is making the post season so why the rush? We have six contract slots left available until the end of the year. We aren't signing six college players in the next five weeks just so they can play one game and burn a year of eligibility. How would that fit into the rebuilding strategy?

It's an interesting (and good) problem to consider.
I get letting them cook a little bit longer and generally find myself on that side of these debates more often than not. That being said, Flames development is going to need to take a long hard look at whether there's more to be gained at the NCAA level that wouldn't be gained in the AHL.
Reschny I'm more inclined to think could do with another year in Nodak given the quality of his linemates and his limited goal scoring this season. He's been great but no issues seeing him get another 40ish games at that level.
Wyttenbach on the other hand is super interesting because I'm genuinely not sure how much more production/development you're going to get from him by leaving him in Quinnipiac for another year. Guy is so so good and has a legit Hobey Baker shot, not much more to prove there and I think if he's going to move I'd probably prefer it be up to the AHL rather than into the portal for another NCAA program. Does anybody know if Quinnipiac are going to be good next year? That might also be a factor.
If you're trying to get him into an ideal spot to develop the rest of his game (strength, speed, defensive zone, battles, etc), they'll have to weigh the pros and cons of Quinnipiac versus the Wranglers and what is the best spot to do that.
It'll be interesting to see how they stagger all these different prospects moving up the ranks.

Can still make trades right now, those players just can not be used in the playoffs.
So if they need to, they can move contracts as neccesary.

I'm curious if we'll see an absolute purge of dudes throughout the org to clear up some spots. Next year the following guys are either UFA or RFAs not including AHL only deals:
Stromgren
Kirkland (UFA)
King
Othmann
Bell
Ciona
Bishop (UFA)
Kerins
Morton
White
Grushnikov
Cicek (UFA)
Miromanov (UFA)
Prosvetov (UFA)
Say
Given the 'glers are not exactly setting the world on fire this year I'd expect several of these guys to be on their way out.
Guys I'd for sure keep are: Stromgren, King, Othmann, Morton
Probably want to retain a vet or two but everybody else I could take or leave but more leave than take.

Yes, Flames are at 47 contracts.
However, some of the new guys might have slidable contracts. certain contracts for 19-19 year old players don't count towards the 50. For example: 18-19 juniors with less than 10 NHL games. If that also applies to college players you might get some of the Flames guys through the exception.

Re-sign:
Stromgren
Kirkland (utility forward in event of injury)
King
Othmann
Ciona
Morton
Grushnikov
Walk Away (or AHL deal):
Bell
Bishop
White
Cicek
Kerins (debatable, but if you don't see an NHLer, let him go)
Miromanov
Prosvetov
Say
Voila! 8 new contract spots next season :-)

I'm not going to lie, I would be fine keeping only about 3-4 of those guys on both lists combined on NHL deals. ^^

I agree with most of this but I’d probably keep Kerins and move on from Kirkland

I don't think you keep Kirkland. Guys speed simply hasn't returned since injury. Sucks but that's the way it is.
Didn't Say play well at the start of the year? Well enough to keep?

Say and Sergeev are the Wranglers netminders next year until Zarubin is ready to come over. Did not think he was looking to come over until the 2027-28 season.
By then the Flames will either move out or promote one of Say or Sergeev and move out Cooley.

FWIW I’ve heard that EDM is heavily after Gross as well.
Not to mention he’s probably the top most coveted college UFA at this point.
Hope Dad sets him straight on this one.

Jokes aside, Edmonton is a no good place for a developing player. I would question the intellect of a young player who, free to choose amongst several teams, would pick the Oilers.
