Matta is a cap dump, the Flames get their unsigned middle of the road prospect for the cap dump

Carlson is the better player, though.

Utah didn’t need a cap dump to take Weegar.
I believe the Flames wanted a veteran D in reserve because they still intend to load manage Brzu and Parekh. And they may yet trade Pachal or Hanley.
And yes, they got a B prospect.

I like this for the Ducks. They’ve got a good, young squad. Sennecke has an ELC for another 2 seasons, Joe Q is coaching, and the Pacific is hella weak. Go for it.
Left side is pretty good with Zelwegger, Minty, and Lacombe
Right side they could deal Gudas, Trouba, Moore, or Helleson. Or, someone in minors like Hinds or Luneau.

It’s a lot closer in your opinion.

Yes, in my opinion the trade chips are close in value.
I'm not saying Conroy did bad, I just think that a signed Weegar would have a lot more value than Carlson as a rental. I'm surprised the trade value was as close as it was.

Weegar's contract may actually be a negative at his current play and age. His salary is good but lots of years left on a potentially diminishing/aging player.
I believe the Flames wanted 2026 picks over 27 as well, I think CC has his strategy.
Regardless, different moves on different days. Things do shift and adjust as players are traded. There's no perfect moves without hindsight.

Maybe, I don’t know
But he makes 3.5M sitting on their bench. And with Weegar and loaded list of d prospect, he would probably never see ice time again.
Anyway, Conroy got a fair deal, the Caps got a great deal for a 36 yrs old rental. That’s all.

That’s debatable
Most people would not trade Weegar for Carlson at this point

I just don't get it being a 36 year old UFA.
Parayko would have made a lot of sense IMO. Or really any RH dman with term left that's more in the age range to help over the next 3-5 years.

If Andersson doesn't re-sign with the Knights I'm sure they could be one of several teams interested.

Most people is a very general subjective statement, but Carlson is, and has always been a better, more impactful player than Weegar. Both Utah and Anaheim are heading into the playoffs, possibly against each other. Which player would most people rather have on their roster today?

I had a wtf moment when I saw this return for an aging UFA.
As a flames fan though, this is a great trade! UFA who is old and will either stay in Anaheim as an overpay contract next season, or he will leave. It’s one less first round pick in our division. It makes the ducks better this season only, so anti-oilers and anti-Vegas sentiments are satisfied. And if it helps increase the value of our remaining trade D men, even better! Also, if Ducks beat the Flames twice and Oilers once because they are better for this season, good.
I think this trade benefits the Flames.

Carlson is on pace for 64 points this season, which would be the fifth time he's had that many and his EIGHTH 50+ point season.
Weegar has scored 50 points... once.

Today, toss up because Weegar has a bad year but Carlson has been injured and already slowed down the last few weeks
After this year Weegar 100%
