"Locked off, private roadway" huh - I suspect he's going to be under some pressure to provide proof.

Well, Calgary does have a race track where people can go do this. They should use it. Hell, they can afford to rent it, and if they feel it's worth it, they could probably hire some EMT's to stay on scene.
I know who one of those guys is. Life is pretty slack when your Dad and brother discover and diamond mine.

I did notice though that the cars in the Sun's photo seem to be different colors than the one in the Youtube video. There's enough money and high end exotics in this town that it might not have been them.

These guys have been doing this for years.. The owner of ZR auto lives in my neighbourhood, I'm about 99% positive he was there.. He's the guy in the videos posted on the web, I believe they did infact close off that section of highway when they went for top speed runs.. If not they would be extremely foolish not to conceal their identities. I doubt anything major will come of them catchin one. First off I don't think they can give you a ticket based on hearsay.. Second by the sounds of things they didnt catch them in the act. Thank god this didnt happen in bc, otherwise the authorities may crush the car(s).. If these guys can afford the cars, they can definately afford a high priced lawyer..

I think the bigger problem is that no matter what time you hit the highway, there is always someone else on there. You have a much better chance of killing someone going 200km/h rather than 120km/h.
I can see it being hard to resist the temptation to take your car for a rip every once in a while, but scheduled organized time trials is really a bit overboard. As someone mentioned, go rent out race city or just show up for secret streets and have 200 18 year olds oggle your car while you're at it.

Not unless you mistook a Grand Prix for a horse and exhaust for road apples.
A small town like Black Diamond having two of these cars that are fairly rare in the same morning that the police have said this racing occurred in the same area. You calculate the probability.

What exactly is there intended purpose anyways? To race on public streets or race in a private competitive atmosphere?
The way I see it, street racing is not their intended purpose.

Calgary does have a track, but these cars wouldn't be allowed to race there. I beleive if your car can do the strip in under 11 seconds, you need a roll cage and other safety equipment. I'm thinking that these cars may need some modification before they are allowed at race city.

I'm no IHRA rules master here, but I think if your car is unmodified and can go that fast from the factory then you are Ok to go without said equipment.
I'm someone can dig throught the rules for us.

oh, that's quite possible. usually all the cars on the track have to be modified to go under 11 seconds since their pretty much all worth <50,000 new.

I don't think that's true at all. Alberta has plenty of stretches of highway where you can follow the road straight to the horizon looking either direction, and without an intersecting road for miles and miles. Certainly there is almost always someone else on the #1, but there are plenty of desolate secondary highways like that where you could spend pretty much all day hangin around and not see another vehicle, especially in the early morning on a Sunday.

But what is the road quality like? Typically the more obscure the highway is the worse the roads are. If they hit a pothole at 200kph it would blow apart their suspension.

Street racing is definitely not that kind of car's intended purpose. Driving at high speeds are, and that's exactly what they're being used for - just in the wrong setting, I guess.
The original purposes of the cars and the drivers of these cars are different.

I agree with that point, which is also made by the police, but whose saying these guys are just ripping down some road the first time they've been on it. It would only take a drive by or two to check the road conditions out for safety. There are isolated roads in good condition.
I'm not saying people should be allowed to do this, but if done in a relatively responsible manner the risk to others and themselves needn't be that high.

The roads/highways around here in High River are in pretty good shape.

Speed limits are laws meant to protect ALL drivers. What happens when one of these guys loses control, crashes, and kills himself or another one of the drivers?
Recently I saw a Ferarri in the ditch that was obviously whipping around Old Banff Coach Road heading out to Springbank. I had a good laugh at that.

Doesn't harm anyone at all, except the driver if he screws up- his own doing.

Think about what will happen if someone turns on to that road early that morning The guy having fun isn't going to have enough time to stop, and as a result he kills himself and the other driver.
Or a deer decides to dart out of the ditch.
The thing is, there are no gaurentees that other drivers won't be on the road at that time.

Im not sure what most of your guys logic thinking that it is okay as long as the roads are empty. These morons are going to kill themselves or someone else and im not sure what makes them owning ferarris is all okay to do so.
I work in a job where i see scenarios like this quite often (maybe not ferarris)and the aftermaths are never pretty for the victim or family members.
If they have that much money take your cars to a place where you can Legally race them and dont put others at risk.
There is never a safe time of day to be pulling that crap. Then again it is idiots like those are the reason i have a job.
