If he doesn't go at the deadline this year, I would be surprised if he didn't go in the offseason given everything that's happened. Teams will have more flexibility then to work around his contract and/or offer better assets for retention.
I personally doubt he's back come training camp next year.

If the offer doesn't cut it then retain on Coleman and get a bigger return there. At some point you have to say we don't need to trade him and mean it.
Montreal and Colorado can choke in the playoffs
|
But the problem is you can get a 1st this year, or a lower pick down the road (if he is still tradeable). You are losing out on valuable assets in hopes to trade him for lesser assets later.
I don't see us needing to use the retention spot on anyone else in the next few years.

Kadri's age 36 season next year. I'm not sure how many offseason plans hinge on acquiring him, tbh.
I think his most marketable time is at a deadline, whether it's this year or next. He's a guy you want in your lineup to help you win a cup.

Personally I think it’s a mistake.
But I also thought we should have traded him last deadline.
If he goes past this one, it’s going to be even tougher to move him.
For me the biggest issue is the Flames approached him about being traded over a month and a half ago, he agreed he’d expand his list and help them facilitate even though he was comfortable staying. Around the Andersson trade he approached management and said he too would like to be traded.
We’re now risking holding onto a guy you approached for a trade, he agreed too and you held onto all this time and may have jeopardized his value by doing so, coupled with refusing to retain salary.
It’s not a good look again, I wouldn’t say it’s Markstrom bad but it’s just not a good look.
Time will tell here, but I’m getting less and less confident as the hours go by.

My guess is the offer last year from Colorado didn't require retention, and Conroy thought that would be there again from some team this year.
And it just hasn't happened.
Colorado went and have the Kadri money to Nelson and don't have room for that now.
No other team is as motivated to add Kadri as the Avs were last season.
My take is Kadri will have even less value at the draft, teams will be even less focused on the short term benefit and more focused on the long term.
And long term focus does not bode well for trading for his contract. Last offseason we talked about if a team would give Kadri 4 x $7M in free agency and I think they would have.
This year do I think a team would give Kadri 3 x $7M at 36 years old, nope I don't think I do any more.
With each year that passes the risk in the last 2 years of that deal becomes more prominent

Was the offer from Colorado ever confirmed? I don't think we know this for sure.

Not sure how true it is nor has it been discussed already. However there is a reddit post saying ownership stopped a deal for Kadri https://www.reddit.com/r/CalgaryFlames/s/oeREW0LM6C
Could be just nothing though

Yeah I'm not disagreeing with you or anything. I just think that the slots do hold a lot of value, and the fact that they have to choose between Kadri and Coleman on retention right now kind of proves that. I think if they had the luxury of retaining on both, deals would be done already

My concern with waiting to the offseason to trade Kadri is that I think the teams will be even more risk averse in the summer. The pressure point of a deadline doesn’t exist in the summer so they’ll wait till the TDL. Waiting to the TDL also makes it so teams can see how he is doing next year. See if the fall off in his game happens.

There may well be needs for retention spots, even after Coleman and Kadri are gone. There’s Whitecloud, Matta, Farabee, Sharangovich, Frost, not to mention other players that get signed or come back in trades.
Losing that spot for 3 more years may lower returns on future trades if the team is limited in retention slots, and you have to respect the value that they have.
Hopefully they can take back a bad contract in lieu of retention on Kadri. Then maybe you can use the retention slot on that player down the road.

How do you know, we never asked him. Not that it matters now.
I also think you run the risk of having a very salty Kadri in the locker room if you don't trade him.

And retention for 3 more years on a bigger contract has to be worth more than retention on a smaller contract for 1 more year

Dreger:
Calgary does not want to retain on Kadri
Flames need to be blown away by offers on Whitecloud and Coleman
Lebrun:
Montreal interested in Whitecloud
Montreal cannot go deep into Kadri unless there is retention

I know it's a common theme league wide, but is anyone sick to death of no trade clauses and trade protection? What happened to the Mike Sillinger and Ray Sheppard's of the league where they'd play anywhere at any time? Now players won't even go to actual contenders in many cases. Multiple players have rejected trades to Los Angeles of all places!

They are paid to be professional and play, but it would be kind of awkward to stick around knowing that either player or team wanted to make a trade. It would be even worse if it is true that Weegar was traded because the other move didn't happen for whatever reason. It's the type of thing that can cause rifts in the team.
It's all just speculation though, so probably not something to worry about too much.
