Flames Weegar would consider waiving no-trade clause

https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article...-trade-clause/

Quote:
Would he waive his no‑trade clause if the Calgary Flames asked?

“I think I'll put it this way, ” he said as the dressing room emptied for a quiet one-on-one chat.

"I think everything's got to be put into consideration at some point. Will I? I don't know, but obviously it's the first time I've ever been in a situation with a lot of rumors around me. So, it's new, it's different.”

It’s uncomfortable, but it’s the reality punctuating another lost season in Calgary where the rebuild hasn’t progressed anywhere near as quickly as anyone hoped.

And so, as roughly one third of the Flames roster is being bandied about by insiders and observers as potential trade targets ahead of Friday’s deadline, it’s only natural to ask the 32-year-old if he has, or would, reevaluate his trade protection.
Quote:
“It's not something that I wanted to be a part of,” he said of the speculation, and likely the losing.

“When I first came here, obviously I wanted to be a part of a winning team. Obviously times change. It's been four years since then. But I love it, so I always want to elaborate on that part, because I do love it here. If something did occur, and Connie came up to me and asked, it would be a tough decision, for sure.”

That’s not a trade request. Not even close.

But it is the first time the Ottawa native has publicly acknowledged that, under the right circumstances, he’d listen.

And that alone is significant, given what a pillar he’s long considered to be in Calgary.

“Just like they’ve got to consider trading me, I’ve got to consider all the options too,” he said.

“But I love it here. I want to win here. And it's just, it's too bad that we're all put into situations like this. But it's part of the game. I kind of just want to focus on how we all have got to find a way to play together, even with all the rumors and stuff. It's a weird time, for sure.”

I like Mack . But if this train wreck of a season for him continues I'll drive him to the airport in my trunk.

Actually hate saying that because he seems like a solid solid dude.

He’s a vet and a pro. If he doesn’t move I’d expect a mental reset for next year.

I feel like if he's traded now whoever buys will be buying low, I'd rather wait and see if he can have a bounce-back year next year.

Yeah, I see no upside in trading Weegar this year. We don't need to at all. I'd bet he'll rebound and then I'd be more amenable to trading him in the '27 off season. I think he's a valuable vet in helping our young D core along.

Unless it’s a huge overpay, wait a year and see. Whitecloud would be a better move now at peak value.

The best time to trade Weegar was last summer.

The second best time to trade Weegar is now.

But I don't think the Flames will trade him unless a team is really determined to acquire him. He has 4 years left @ $6.25 million - Not the worst contract but GMs don't like the 4 years left. So again - there is talks about retention asks and the Flames just don't want to go there.

I don't think a team like San Jose would really be looking for retention would they, they just gave Sherwood a worse contract than what's left here for Weegar and winger is way less important than RH dman.

I really feel like there would be a fit there between those two teams.

Like if they offer something like Oilers 1st + Bystedt I think I'm saying yes to that pretty easily at this point. Now who knows if that would be on the table but it feels pretty fair on the whole to me.

Kind of funny how it goes just about every time.

"I'm all in for a rebuild"
"I'd consider waiving my NTC if it helps"
"I want out now, thanks"

lol

Weegar at step 2, where Kadri was last year and most of this year.

As long as it isn’t Ottawa. They have crap to offer.

I think the moment the team asks you if you'd consider waiving your NTC - it doesn't take long before you start wanting out. You realize they don't see you as part of the future, you mentally start disconnecting from the team and the idea that you are a Flame. You start to get excited about playing on a winning team... before you know it, you are asking for a trade.

Totally. He should be captain.

Might not be in this boat if his pal Huberdeau had come over as advertised.

I like Weegar, but damn.. his shift on the 4th Dallas goal last night might be one of the worst I've ever seen from a D man. 2 horrific giveaways, gets pantsed by Duchene, and then flips the puck off the ref after the goal.

Any team trading for him right now is doing it for reputation only.

It's just the nature of the beast. Any player you try to trade--- the opposing GM will ask - what are you willing to retain?

I love Weegs, but if he keeps playing the way he did last night the Flames will need to add a sweetener to move him.

*light green text, perhaps...
