17 Years Ago Today: Flames Trade for Jokinen/Leopold
https://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/fla...opold-1.842917
Quote:
Flames firm up with Jokinen, Leopold
Calgary Flames general manager Darryl Sutter failed to obtain forward Olli Jokinen at last year's NHL trade deadline. But he wrapped him up this time around.
Sutter proved to be one of the busiest GMs prior to Wednesday's 3 p.m. ET deadline, picking up Jokinen from the Phoenix Coyotes for forwards Matthew Lombardi and Brandon Prust and a first-round draft pick.
Sutter also reacquired defenceman Jordan Leopold from the Colorado Avalanche for defenceman Lawrence Nycholat, prospect Ryan Wilson and a second-round pick.
"If there had been more deadline, we had more room [under the salary cap]," Sutter said. "We wanted to get a centreman and we wanted to get a defenceman.
Just three days later Jokinens debut against the Flyers resulted in 2 goals, me and my brother were convinced we were destined for big things.
I'm almost certain thats the year the Flames blew a huge lead in the NW. Calgary Herald had a sports section headline with a rearview mirror and an avs logo "objects may be closer than they appear".
I think this may have been the unofficial spiritual end of the Kipper/Sutter/Regehr era of the Flames being contenders.

I remember that first Jokinen game too. We were cup bound!
Oh how sports can be so cruel, absolutely no where near it then or since.

Taking a while to get to 5000
The first round loss to Chicago, Cammalleri clocking that Blackhawk in the faceoff circle for no reason. Good times.

Ya, that Jokinen experiment turned out ugly.
Maybe we shouldn't be trading for former Panthers...

Scoring Winger
And the Mike Richards song on the radio that followed.
“Oll-i Jo-ki-nen is good he scores a lot of goals, for us. Oll-i Jo-ki-nen is good he came here on a Greyhound bus”

Yeah, that was Chicago's first really good season of their dynasty, losing the conference finals to Detroit. They were off and running the next season.
I remember watching game 2 on the airplane TV coming back from Florida, which Chicago won, going up 2-0.
Chicago had a better season, but I thought Calgary's better experience would carry the day.

The Flames had a bunch of injured guys on the back end after the TDL. I feel like they could've gone on a bit of a run if they were a bit healthier.

My favorite trade deadline day as a fan. Sure felt like the final touches on a cup run but injuries ruined that season

the Flyers game had me convinced we'd be back in the finals again. At this point 04 5 years in the past but still felt like things were possible.

Oh God...Jokinen...what a time to be alive.
"Finally! We got Iggy a #1 Center!!"
Unfortunately he sucks.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.

Yup, unbeknownst to us our biggest need wasn't a first line center, it was pro scouting

Me and my buddies were in Okinawa that day. I remember us getting super excited after hearing about the trades online and the locals were wondering why the gaijin were so loud and happy. We went for Rafute (braised pork belly, local Okinawan delicacy) that afternoon to celebrate lol.

I always liked Leopold. Him and Regehr were dynamite. Brodie reminded me a lot of him.

I'm pretty sure the first OJ game was a PPV that we all happily paid for.
We were so horny for a number one centre to finally play with Iginla. Turns out they fit was awful and OJ just wasn't enough of a disturber.
That payoff series against Chi though. That's when I truly started to lose Chelsea Dagger.

Man having Kipper in net was the best thing to happen for a Flames fan.
You just knew he would never give up any soft goals and never worried about goaltending for all those years.
Too bad we couldn't score.....

which is probably why Darryl was able to get the deal done with the yotes instead of the cats.
