So is the retention spot used for just this year if we trade Kadri, or each subsequent year of his contract? If so that’s likely the tough part of the trade, we might have to take back a contract.

Every year. They can retain on Coleman or Kadri this deadline

That was my understanding. Totally get why they’d rather take a contract back. Coleman’s would be a bit more palatable of course.

A retention spot is used for the duration of the contract. That's why we're still using a retention spot on Markstrom this year.

I would think if Coleman is traded Flames don't use retention.

You hope,

If Kadri isn't traded then you have months and months more of it

I'm not going to be impatient. This is the last week of meaningful hockey talk before the draft

They do. I said earlier in the week that I expect Coleman news on Monday. & Kadri situation is up in the air due to retention. I don't have anything further to report.

They have offers for both players. It's up to them now.

What is it they are waiting for! Even if the offers are low ball you get an aging asset off the books and help get a higher pick this draft.

It's incredible that Coleman & Kadri are in the lineup tonight. Balls of steel from management. At the casino table at 3 am on a saturday night vibe.

They're waiting to see if they need to use their last retention slot on Coleman. If so, they obviously can't use it on Kadri; and it sounds like Coleman is going to bring the biggest return, so he's the priority.

I think they are probably trying to play up to the notion that, hey, we don't "need" to trade either guy this season, so you better make it worth our while.

Feels like they are pushing for one more asset or something.
Or a slight upgrade on one of the assets.

We need these trades to go forward

From Bruce Levine (Dallas radio guy)

Jim Nill says Dallas does not plan to pursue players with additional contract term leading at the trading deadline.
Stars will explore players with expiring contracts as a priority.
Nill does not want to limit future negotiating ability by adding to a tight Salary Cap situation

As the old saying goes, how do you know when a GM is lying? When their lips are moving. Or not.

They have two major trades to make and can only retain salary on one of them. I'm pretty sure that's the holdup – finding an acceptable deal without retention for one of the players.
