Definitely feels like there has been a tempering of expectations on a Kadri return when listening to Steinberg. Sounds like a deal can get done but I don’t think we should be expecting more than what Andersson got.

I feel like they need to try and get something similar or possibly hold onto him? He may have requested a trade though for all we know?

We should be expecting less than what Andersson got. Kadri is 35 or thereabouts. Thinking it would be similar or more is crazy talk.

The way I look at it is if we get an equivalent pick back that we had to send out to move Monahan, that's perfect. If it ends up that there's more than that is even better.

Kadri basically replaced what Monahan brought without the physical injury worry that Monahan had.

Even if it's just an on par replacement of that pick, the value Kadri has brought over the past few seasons has been wonderful in his impact both on and off the ice.

Would be incredible to get a 1st for Coleman but I just don’t think that is realistic. He’s been injured for a while now so his value is not at its peak IMO but, more importantly, it is so rare for wingers to return 1st round picks in trades these days. Especially ones with decent trade protection. Looking back at the last 5 years, what wingers have returned 1st round picks at the trade deadline? I’m certain there have been a few but I can’t think of them off the top of my head. And I would think any time it has happened it’s usually for top line wingers I assume… ones that are as close to being play drivers as you can get in a trade.

By the time Nazem Kadri finished talking, you couldn’t help but notice the two words that hung in the air longer than any of his answers.

“For now.”

That’s the reality of the Calgary Flames these days: everything is temporary, everyone is movable, and even the veterans who once represented the organization’s win‑now ambitions are now staring down the barrel of a rebuild they never signed up for.

Kadri, to his credit, isn’t pretending otherwise.

He’s been around this league long enough to know his time in Calgary is coming to an end.

The only question is when: this year or next?

It’s not speculation anymore.

It’s inevitable.
Quote:
“I'm not a ‘one foot out the door’ kind of guy, wherever I am. I exert my full energy and give it 110 per cent, so I try not to let it affect me too much. We're all human in that sense. But you know, I'm a Calgary Flame, and my dedication is to here, for now.”

For now.

Asked about reports he’s told the team he’d be open to helping facilitate a move, he didn’t dance around it.

“At the end of the day, they can decide,” said Kadri, armed with a 13-team no-trade list.

“I think everybody has to explore every avenue as to what's best for me, and what's best for the team. Whether that's here or not, I'm not quite sure, but I enjoy being here at the end of the day.”

He hasn’t asked for a trade, nor is he unhappy here.

What’s best for both sides is a trade.

The Flames are rebuilding, and Kadri wants to win.
Quote:
The Flames crave and deserve the assets he can bring back. Picks, prospects - whatever the return ends up being, it fits the direction they’re headed.

So yes, the conversations have already started.

“We've had internal chats,” Kadri admitted of ongoing talks with Conroy about the reality of the situation.

“Obviously, those we’ll keep private, but, yeah, we've had discussions and communicated. I think that's what makes it great, is having that open line of conversation and just being able to understand where everybody's at.”

I really didn't think the Flames would commit to a full tear-down, looks like it is headed that way

You just know that next year, someone will be complaining that the Flames refuse to do a proper rebuild because Backlund is still on the roster. They'll probably complain about old geezers like Frost and Bahl blocking the kids.

Brzustewicz probably increased his value from a 2nd round pick (where he was drafted) to a late 1st after his D+1 season. Looking for prospects to target in trades even if they aren’t recent 1st rounders. Would love to know of any from teams rumoured to be in on the Kadri/Coleman/Weegar/Whitecloud.

Why I ask is because so many of us (including myself) want that top prospect from a team in one of these trades but the reality is that teams so rarely trade their top prospect unless they are starting to trend down (eg. Greentree from LA). It’s even more rare if the team is including a 1st round pick in the trade already. So if the flames can’t get that top prospect, from a team, who is the really good prospect to target while also getting a 1st round pick?
If we trade with Tampa - Coleman for example - aside from the obvious in O'Reilly, I'd be interested in getting Benjamin Rautiainen. Drafted in the 4th round last year as an overager. Leading the Liiga in points as a 20 year old.

I’m also interested in asset management meaning that all UFAs should be traded prior to the deadline. Bean is on IR so not likely, but Lomberg should be moved.

It’s good for the player and Flames get some asset back. I’d even take some IR salary back if helped the return.

A first by itself would be great. The goal is to be set after these next two drafts.

Likely has a lot to do with how well they played last year and how badly they've played this year. There was some hope last year, that a few higher end prospects could be added to the group and there would be success.

I don't see how anyone can look at this season's results and see that anything but a full tear down is necessary. On top of that Huberdeau is done for a while, and it seems like the older vets are excited about playing on a more competitive team for the twilight of their careers.

Even if the Flames trade Kadri and Coleman for futures this year can you even call it a full rebuild when only 10 total veterans have been traded for picks and prospects?
