Those top teams often lose to the "minnows" on the world stage. At the very least the games are competitive, with the goalies keeping the games close. The Women's tournament is unfortunately much different. I remember the Americans lost once to the Swedes... otherwise Canada/US have won every single game. It's a lock they'll meet each other in the finals every Olympics. It doesn't appear like the other countries are improving in their programs.

Binnington wasn't great last year either, but in the 4 nations he was huge. So he's got a Cup and a 4 Nations title under his belt so the net is his.

But much like we saw in Salt Lake, I think Pat Quinn's intention was to give the net to Curtis Joseph, but Cujo wasn't that great so they pivoted to Brodeur and the rest was history.

It would be equally unsurprising if Binnington is the main starter for the entirety of the tournament, or if he craps the bed and they pivot to Thompson.

My hope if that if there are warning signs that Binnington just doesn't have it this tournament, Cooper doesn't stubbornly stick with him out of some recency bias from the 4 Nations.
It’s not highschool football. Play the best player at the time.

Not having professionals in hockey at the the Olympics in 2018 and 2022 has made me super excited this time around. So many great memories from the 2002 games (Sakic and Iginla were dynamite) and 2010 when they dominated the gold medal game but Miller was outstanding and of course the Crosby OT winner.

For me it's the sweetest when they beat Team USA in the Gold Medal game. I wouldn't mind if USA faltered and got knocked out in the quarterfinals but a part of me wants it to be the Gold Medal game and Canada dominates.

Not all that much of an upset in the grand scheme of things. Latvia or something along those lines would be a big one. But with Men's teams they check pretty tight. Slavkovsky looks really good though.

I wonder if Montreal would ask about Pospisil with him and Slavkovsky on the same line and showing some decent chemistry.

Of course after I say that, Pospisil goes down. Dude can't catch a break.

Stayed on the bench which is a good sign but that was a deliberate shot to the head

Up 3-1 with just a few minutes to go in the third.

This doesn't really shock me. They were going into this tournament with a huge chip on their shoulder. I read this article about it yesterday. There are several great quotes from Pospisil in particular.

Might be in the minority but I think the top 8 teams based on record in the preliminaries and then goal differential should make the quarters. Don't think it's fair that teams 10-12 could lose all 3 games in the preliminaries and still make the 2nd round with just needing a single win in round 2 to make the quarterfinals.

Is there even a concussion protocol at the Olympics? Injuries seem to be treated differently internationally (Parekh played a whole finals and then went on IR here).

Genuinely don't know, I would think so? The announcers were wondering why no penalty was called, this is IIHF rules is it not? (my thought not theirs) That was deliberately to the head. Confusing.

Looks like it's handled a little differently and if you are removed you don't play for 24 hours (so I bet they are more reluctant to remove a player).

Agreed, being "loyal" isn't working out so great for the women's team.

Binnington should not have been invited at all. To me given his terrible numbers this year there's little hope of him stepping in and somehow catching fire. Certainly he has a better team in front of him but if he doesn't have the ability (as his numbers have shown this year), why bring him in for last years' performance? Seems like more a "hope" pick then one based on fact. I know it won't happen but they should keep him as the 3rd.
