Then there's the fact that per the Clarity Act, the House of Commons has to deem that the question is clear and result in a clear expression of will by the population. If they deem it not to, no negotiations would be entered into for the secession.

We should get a poll thread going for how many signatures they claim to get. never mind how many are accepted.
I'm gonna go with, 83,000. But I also bet if anyone bothers looking into it, almost half with be duplicates, because these unscrupulous people, might be to stupid to understand the rules that they are only allowed to sign once, and don't really care about democratic fraud, that just something they say when they think it helps them.
it will be functionally unprovable, but that's my guess they claim 83,000, and if ever audited they find less than 50,000.

What do you mean if anyone bothers looking into it? That is very clear part of the whole process and Elections Alberta will bother to look at the signatures and they have methodology in place to affirm the signature total. That methodology was used to verify the previous petitions. Do you not believe in the capacity of Elections Alberta to verify the signatures?

Basically I am predicting that with substantial wrong doing and fraud they will reach roughly half of the reduced total required, so elections Alberta would not validate signatures and it would be irresponsible to throw and bunch of resources at it to affirm they are failures, when they could just announce right away that the separatists are failures. But again, this is just my prediction.

How is Elections Alberta going to determine that it is a failure without going through the exercise of validating signatures? You want our public institutions to just go off a hunch?

They interviewed a seperatist supporter, just a short sound bite
Paraphrasing but went like this 'if the 70% dont like it(seperation) they can just leave, BC and Sask are open for them'
Alrighty then math and democracy genius...

You think they’re going to claim 83,000? I’d take the over on that all day. They need 177,000 and they think they’re going to get a million. The claimed amount is going to much higher than 83,000.

If the separatists don't claim to have 177,000 Elections Alberta can just confirm the failure, without counting.

I think that's a fair guess,
but I was thinking about it today, and thinking about the 2000-4000 signatures most of these recalls are getting, and i think this is just a harder number than people think, especially when they are primarily leaning on small towns for this.
The forever Canada petition was crazy, many days 15 places to sign in Calgary, signatures steadily rolling in the whole way through. I think these guys do 10% of what they did.

Well, I'm hoping that you're right, because having this on the ballot is dangerous. But I do think that they're going to get enough signatures. I don't think they can actually get a million, and that seems ludicrous, but who knows how high they claim to have gotten.

I think they get at least 250k. I think there are far more dimwitted selfish victims in our province than people want to admit.

They'll get enough signatures, whatever amount they get will be enough. Even if they don't clear the bar, the government will just lower the bar some more

A message from Corb's Team and Water Not Coal and CoalPetition.ca
Finally, the moment we've been waiting for! Our petition is live and we're fired up to get this thing going. That's why we are inviting you to our official campaign launch events.
LETHBRIDGE: February 20th from 4-8 at the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden
CALGARY: February 21st from 1-5pm at the Alexandra Centre Hall
EDMONTON: February 22nd from 12-4 at the Orange Hall Strathcona
This is where we come together as Albertans, and kick off our movement to protect our water, mountains and ranchlands, for good. This is our moment to start gathering signatures and send a message, that we won't be ignored anymore.
Here's what to expect:
• You'll get a chance to sign the petition
• Hear from Corb and special guests
• Learn about volunteering
Check your email if you have signed up to canvass and rsvp to the event in your area!!
We've spent months preparing for this and we know you are eager to get started. Now it's time to GO.
Bring your friends, your neighbours, your hockey team, your book club — anyone who cares about our clean water and our Rocky Mountains.
See you there,
Corb's Team
Water Not Coal
Alberta, Canada
PS. If your town or city is not here, we are planning other events - stay tuned!

It will be higher than 83,000 for sure, the majority of conservatives are separatists and conservatives make up the majority of Alberta votes. When 30% of the province wants to separate (and upwards of two thirds of conservatives) you will get more than 83,000 signatures.

UCP deplorables whining that the country music deplorable is disinvited from speaking at the teacher's convention.
Well FU Separatist Paul Brand! isn't he an anti vax nurse too?

They’ll easily get enough to trigger a referendum unfortunately, but the referendum will fail. What happens after that though? Smith specifically says the referendum is a pressure relief valve but these folks will be more torqued than ever if they lose.
In reality the pressure she’s trying to relieve is a threat to split the UCP party. So she’s going to have to double down on currying favour with those folks to keep her job and it will only get worse. There is no placating the fringe.

Anyone who doesn’t have to live with the consequences of this, should really stay out of it. That should mean an upper age limit cut off.

Ya, a referendum loss won't stop them. If the UCP doesn't openly become the separatist party, they will create their own. This will be a decades long drag on our political discourse, distracting us form solving problems and endangering the economy.
There is absolutely no likely outcome that makes this anything but negative for Alberta, yet Smith continues to drive the bus without telling us where she's taking us. But what we do know is that every destination is ####sville, so I don't really understand why anyone is still letting her drive. Maybe a doctor or geologist can fill us in on the rationality.

One day, everyone will acknowledge Fuzz was right about a lot of things. This is a good start! Thanks! Though I'd still give them their 0.1 weighted vote.

Has the govt announced what they intend to do with the petition that garnered 450K votes?
Or just ignoring it?
