When was the last time a player of his quality went to free agency? Marner is probably the closest, and he still ended up being a sign and trade despite people pretty much knowing where he was going - and Makar is a significant tier above Marner. Makar may want that 7th year on his deal. 6 may not be a deal breaker though, as a 34 year old elite defenceman as a UFA he could be in line for another big contract.

20 million a year to play a game that most of them love. Unreal.

I don’t know if anyone gets paid that much to do something they hate. You put in a lot of years learning before you ever get a monetary reward, and that reward is never guaranteed until you get there.

Baseball players get $50MM+ to do the same.
Salaries never have any correlation to how enjoyable the job may be.

Besides Makar, a lot of the key guys in Colorado are already in the 30-34 range. I didn't see them being the team they are now in 3ish years. Even MacKinnon will not be the same player by the time he's 34.

They will be rebuilding like Tampa is this year with their old players. Suspect Colorado is a wagon for years to come.

Colorado will likely be holding nothing back trying to get their superstar Dman to stay.
Hopefully the money isn't the biggest factor for Makar, and with him being loyal, hopefully he feels like he's filled his obligations adequately to Colorado and his original loyalty of being a Flames fan (from what posters here are saying) takes over.
Flames and their fans deserve to have one of these go our way for once IMO

No player of his quality has ever gone UFA. The only ones even in the neighborhood were Panarin, Neidermayer, Chara. You could make an argument about Bobby Hull going to the WHA.

The only real hope is a Gaudreau situation where they offer him what he asks and he still says no.

Pretty much yep. I know the Avs used to be cheap, but they seem to pony up for the players that really matter. I'm sure they see Makar that way and will likely open up the vault for him. Just have to hope he has Flames jammies tucked away somewhere.

Why would we trade Parekh for him if he will sign here as a UFA? That would be really dumb.

Some posters here just can't help themselves. They desperately want to include Parekh in every trade.

Parekh would definitely be part of the ask by the Avs though. Parekh plus a first probably doesn't get it done. It's why a trade is pretty tough.

I've never seen a player who has the potential to be elite, be thrown into so many trade offers. What is going on with wanting to trade Parekh.

Makar to Calgary only makes sense as a UFA.
Getting Makar next year only helps Calgary get a much worse draft pick.
Waiting a year is definitely the way to go if he is hellbent on playing here.

I'm not saying I completely agree, but he is kinda a high ceiling low floor guy if he doesn't improve his defending.

I'm not personally advocating for a Parekh trade, but I could see a few reasons why some might:
A) because he can't play in the AHL, and it doesn't look like he's physically mature enough to play in the NHL, his development might stall.
B) he might be the next Evan Bouchard; a great complementary piece and point producer, but it's hard to build a defenseman who can't defend, into your core.
It's way too early to be making any kind of judgement about his future though, so I think trading him right now would be a massive mistake, unless he's part of a package to get a can't-miss young superstar in return (which is absolutely not happening).

ya the goal should be to build a strong enough young core that Makar views us as a preferrable destination to win too. The same way we keep talking about how Ras, Panarin, etc should be looking at SJ.

His defending is fine, he just is not a physical defender.

Most star UFAs never make it to UFA as they re-sign with their team prior.
I think the only way for us to get Makar is via trade. And the only asset that could be interesting for them in losing Makar, would be Parekh.
Parekh's ceiling is unknown, he has the potential (albeit unlikely) to be at the same level as a Karlsson. Makar will remain elite for another 8 years.
I would make that trade any day for the sure think in Makar.
I can't imagine the AVS would though, unless their hand was forced by Makar.
