Well, according to the team building experts on CP, you are supposed to trade players two years before UFA. Accordingly, the Avs should do it this year.
It's crazy that young Cale is already 28 at the end of the current deal, after next season.

If makar was traded this year, but a bidding war that would be.
And one Calgary could not afford to enter into.
Calgary needs to get him as a UFA or not at all.
But Colorado won't trade him unless it's after next season and he indicates he won't resign in Colorado.

Oh, I know. But people freaked here because they didn't trade Rasmus last season.
As for trades, Colorado did trade Rantanen in similar circumstances. And maybe Calgary will have enough bullets next season to make a play. The certainly will have draft capital. But the cost would gut the prospects. And by the time Calgary's new draftees make an impact, Makar will be over 30.
With a Stenberg/McKenna/Verhoeff and a Dupont/Joseph/Privalov to add to Parekh and Wolf and a brand new barn I imagine that if he chooses to test the market, the Flames will be in contention.
Especially if Colorado wins again. He may look at what other things he'd like to check off his career bucket list.
When my wife and our first child were discharged from the hospital we didn't leave that minute. Reason was that overtime in the Canada and USA 2010 gold medal game was just underway. Hung around a small T.V. to see Crosby score the golden goal before we left. Hard to believe that's almost 16 years ago.
Been a bit longer than that since the Dion Phaneuf trade. That team was refusing to rebuild.

I don't see a compelling reason for Makar to leave Colorado. We just gotta hope Parekh becomes a difference maker
Doesn't his wife still live in Calgary? Depending on where the Flames are trending even if they're still not out of the rebuild yet that might be enough to convince him.
Olympic break update from The Athletic's 50,000 simulations of the remainder of the season.
Median finish: 31st place with 72 points, 9 points ahead of the Canucks and 1 behind the Blackhawks, with the Blues and Rangers also forecasted to finish with fewer than 80 points.
Pick first: 12% of simulated seasons
Pick top five: 78% of simulated seasons
Pick top ten: 100% of simulated seasons
Make playoffs: 0% of simulated seasons (92 points to get in)
Other tidbits:
- Post Andersson trade, The Athletic has the Flames as the worst team in the league the rest of the way but the Canucks aren't far behind and have built an insurmountable lead.
- Post Panarin trade, the Kings are projected to bump the Oilers from 3rd in the Pacific to wild card #2 and a waste of 7 days with the Avalanche.
- The Maple Leafs sit at 21% to make the playoffs which is wonderful to see.
