2026 Milano-Cortina Viewing Logistics
Hello all,
I'm almost embarrassed to ask this question as it is likely something that seems obvious to many of you, but I'm not sure how best to ensure I can record a particular event.
According to https://olympic.ca/schedule-2026-winter-olympics/ , the men's downhill is at 0330 on Feb 7th, and the women's downhill is at 0330 on Feb 8th. I'm not sure which of our various networks is going to cover one or the other, and their broadcast schedules aren't helping:
https://www.tsn.ca/olympics/article/...-games-on-tsn/
"Olympic Morning/Milano-Cortina Primetime" runs from 7am to 3pm on Feb 7th, for instance. The preceeding show is a re-run of the opening ceremonies. Should I be DVR'ing 8 hours of "primetime" in the hope that a 3:30am race gets rebroadcast in part or in whole during that window? Is there a smarter way of trying to catch this as a viewer?
https://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/summer/tv-schedule
CBC has "Petro Canada Olympic Winter Games Morning: Day 1" starting at 4am on Feb 7th... maybe I need to record that too?
This feels strangely like bottom-dragging for the fish I want to catch, but maybe that's just how it's done.
Thanks in advance for any help, and please don't dunk on me too hard if you're more tv/tech-savvy and are surprised not everyone is, too.

The last few Olympics I've switched completely to watching the CBC online feeds because I can go to any event and watch the replay without worrying about when CBC or TSN will grace us with the event (if at all). There's also no advertising and the commentary is usually the "global" feed so it's not hyper focused on a specific countries' athletes too.
So if you have a way to browse the CBC website on your TV or use the CBC Gem app, you should be able to do that to avoid the hassle of wondering when they'll air the events and watch them at your leisure.
EDIT: Oh, and CofR has always been great for sorting out what channels some events will be on, but that's usually shorter notice.

Ya the CBC Gem/online feeds are pretty great. The networks typically say what events will be carried live on each channel but it takes some digging and research to find it all out and it always seems to be subject to change.

Exactly this ^
Best if you have a streaming stick is to add CBC Gem app. All events will be live or on demand, available any time you want to watch.
Good luck!

Well, not a good start for CBC Gem today. The app and streaming are both dying after a minute or so. I tried reinstalling the app, trying different devices, and trying the web browser stream on a laptop.
On their website they have this notice:
Quote:
Please be advised: We are presently conducting an investigation into a playback issue affecting live streams on CBC Gem. You may experience an error message when attempting to access specific live streams, or the stream may stop shortly after it begins.
We are actively looking into this matter. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may be causing.

Replays should be fine at least.

Related question - what do you guys use to stream/cast/whatever from a device (phone/tablet) that has apps on it to a TV with HDMI inputs? I had heard of chromecasts but apparently they're discontinued?

Yes they are discontinued thus cheap but still work just fine and get updates. Make sure you buy the 4k version. Also Gem is a downloadable app for the Chrome cast, so no need to cast it unless you want to.

Bit off topic, but FYI if you intend to use the TSN app on Chromecast 4K. It might not work well on there if Bell hasn't updated the app since August 2025. The audio/video becomes out of sync when you're watching live content. I've recently switch to Google TV Streamer, and the issue isn't present on that.

Chromecast is discontinued but there's lots of devices just like it (like Google TV Streamer) and you can cast to most streaming devices these days.

So is CBC Gem going to be able to handle the demand placed on it by people steaming the hockey? Trying to decide if I should get an OTA antenna as a backup.
Hoping that between all the different ways to watch the game, it won’t be an issue.

Yes, get an antenna. They are cheap af and I've been using them to watch almost all of the Canada games except when I was at work. I'm in NW Calgary near Foothills Hospital and I get reception even in the basement. Make sure you buy extension coax so you can move the antenna around if you need to!
I suspect that 10 million or more Canadians will be watching. Imagine the strain on all of the streaming sites - TSN, Sportsnet, CBC, "other sources". I hope they can handle it - my Sportsnet feed was choppy yesterday at work. I don't want to risk it.
My wife informed me in clear terms that she won't be waking up so I moved the setup to the basement instead of my nice new tv in the bedroom. The sacrifices we make!
Enjoy the game!!

Onn Google TV streaming devices are a good low cost option for anything streaming.
Walmart sells these devices. Unfortunately, they are no where near as cheap in Canada as they are down here, and they are getting harder to find since the firestick crackdown on sideloading apps.

Is there a place in YYC to get one in person?
