Let's say they trade Kadri with retention.
That uses up the last retention spot until they get back 2 spots in the summer.
So then the math is what gets you a better return:
- Coleman now with no retention but another year remaining
- Coleman in the summer with retention but only one year remaining
That's just one element that could impact returns.
|
I think they should prioritize Coleman for the final retention spot this season and punt the Kadri trade until the summer if need be as I think his value has the least impact from the deadline to the summer.

I agree. I think Coleman's value is at its highest as someone to add for your playoff secondary. Players like him lose their shine in the off-season. Everyone knows what Kadri is, I don't think his value floats much unless he goes really crazy in one direction points-wise.

I'd like to re-visit my vote. I initially voted modest loss, but if given the opportunity, I'd increase it to modest win. Two points; for the return now, vs 25' TDL, I think the value received is very good.

I would prioritize Kadri.
I am not sure there is much interest as it is now. Do you risk the chance that with this team and how much slower they are in transition and how much less goal scoring they have been doing, that he is going to pull-out of this 'funk' that he is in? Not necessarily all on him, but the team as a whole aren't scoring goals. Not a whole lot of help out there for him. If it continues through to the end of the season, will he still be a tradable asset? Or will teams back off and think that 35 year old Kadri - 36 before the new season starts - is finally showing his age?
For me, that's the risk there. I would rather get an asset for him and remove that contract rather than anyone else on the team - Coleman will still be a decent 2-way player next season (and easy to trade, even at the draft). Whitecloud and Weegar (if he is really being discussed) also have term. Not worried about the market somehow disappearing.
I think if Kadri continues with his points pace over the last 20 or so games, he may become a negative asset.
I guess using the word 'prioritize' is absolutely meaningless however, right? If someone calls on Weegar, you can't get them to go and take a look at Kadri instead. Teams will call on Kadri if they want a 2nd/3rd line center, they will call on Weegar/Whitecloud while looking for D, and Coleman while looking for a winger. It isn't up to the Flames to prioritize, and there is no way in the world that they would turn down a good-to-great offer for anyone else just because they hope to move a certain player first.

Kadri by far. He's more valuable to a team right now, this year. Coleman we could afford to wait if we had to

Probably need Whitecloud back. Andersson and a couple 2nds should be enough

I think it depends on whether you believe what we are seeing now is regression or, as Royle suggested, Kadri is holding back to ensure he doesn't get hurt in meaningless games. I know fans love to evaluate guys based on their immediate performance but NHL GMs and professional scouting teams are unlikely to have such a narrow view of a player's value.
Anyway, I agree that trading Kadri should be the priority for Conroy's time. Assuming he wants out and will work with Conroy to get a desirable return (and not just lock in 1 trade partner) then I think it should be straightforward for Conroy to build a 2-3 team bidding war for him out of the teams Kadri is willing to go to.
Hopefully the priority of the return is quality over quantity.

If all they offer is a 2nd and you think you can get a 1st, you push it forward. It’s a risk, but not necessarily an error.

You have to consider the value of being worse this year and next as well. Do you make up the "lower" value in return by improving your own picks.
No guarantee but are you better off getting 3rd overall this year and a late 2nd or 7th overall and a late first next year.

The team is already bottom 5 with the 4th hardest remaining schedule. 3 games against the Avs, 2 against the Stars, then throw in some Lightning, Hurricanes, a VGK.
Rangers = 21st hardest
Blues = 12th hardest
Canucks = 20th hardest
Statistically speaking, dramatic effort is not needed to get lower in the standings as the schedule will probably do the work for us. Although, catching the Canucks for the bottom spot will be challenging no matter what with that 8 point gap. Hopefully the Canucks win a bunch of games on their easier schedule.

Yeah not sure why Vegas paid the most for Andersson
He has never played well against the Oilers or Avalanches when it mattered
Not saying he wasn’t a good Flames. He gave everything he had.

I’m amazed Anderson hasn’t signed an extension yet. I’m sure it’s coming

Maybe he actually meant it when he said he wanted to go to free agency.

If you can get something decent for Kadri, that’s the trade I am prioritizing now. Unfortunate they have only one retention slot left, but if Coleman is such a hot commodity someone will just have to pay him.
Kind of stinks we had to retain on Rasmus as he was so much below market already. Hopefully there was a meaningful difference in the return due to that.

The teams That likely want Coleman likely need retention to make it work.
It’s not a question of not wanting to pay him, it’s a question of they simply don’t have the cap room.
