Yeah, Huberdeau basically doesn't count. Conroy didn't sign him, he turned back into a Pumpkin at midnight and that contract cant be touched or moved.

So Huberdeau's not really part of the conversation.

7 for me

I like the direction, I like the drafting, but I would like for them to be a little more aggressive and lean into the turnover more. Overall, good, and some things great. But we've past the point of no return - it's a full rebuild now - so lean into it, and let's go!

7/10. It would be closer to a 10 if they were not entering the rebuild kicking and screaming.

They have already wasted three years trying to be competitive. Yes they traded out a lot of guys and I've liked their return but they could be on their way back up in a year or two instead of hoping to eventually fully bottom out in a year or two.

If they just embraced the suck, we could have guys like Sennecke, Iginla, Celebrini, Schaefer instead of only Parekh, Gridin and Reschny. Still need three or four top end good forwards.... and probably a #1 D-man like Verhoff to turn this around.

An aggressive trade deadline would push me to 8

I am at a 6 with potential to get up to a 7 by the deadline and perhaps higher at the draft. If they make zero moves between now and the draft then it will shift back to a 4-5. I like the drafting, and I like that he hasn’t been overly aggressive in trading for or signing anyone. I like the deals for Wolf, Coronato, and Bahl.

I wish the team was more proactive in trades and was more aggressive at tearing it down. Last year’s surprise season had bright spots like Wolf’s near Calder win and Coronato getting 25 goals but was also in part due to 34 year old Kadri scoring 35 and Huberdeau having a one-off high shooting % and flirting with 30 goals. I feel like last year was a blip in the rebuild and put the team slightly behind schedule.

Last year’s roster was not built with the intention to make the playoffs and give the Habs the flames own 1st. Despite giving up what turned out to be the 16th pick and keeping what turned out to be the 32nd pick stung a bit I am very happy Conroy did not buy into that run as a sign of things to come and he held firm this summer. I really wanted Andersson gone before the season but with how it has turned out everything is fine.

What the Flames do between now and the deadline can impact their score and how things go at the draft also will play a significant factor in how this rebuild is going. It was a very reasonable start that was delayed and now appears back on track.

Kinda cherry picked considering 4 has 8%

Over 70% are 6+

I voted a 6.

The would get:
+1 if they move a couple more veterans with term for futures
+1 if they manage to draft top 3 at least once (lean into the down year)
+1 if some of these stockpiled assets start to hit, and I really do think there are a few that can, but just need to see it

This is the part that irks me about how they've approached this whole situation.

Instead of being "bad" and just embracing the rebuild, the Flames could have had any of Misa, Frondell, Desnoyers, Martin, Hagen, O'Brien, McQueen, or Kindell along with Reschny.

So instead of having one center prospect and a potential Mangiapane type player, we could have two legit top center prospects.

We have to wait another full season to potentially get a top center, which if we are picking in the top 3, that won't be the case this year unless we reach as both of Stenberg and McKenna are wingers and Verhoff is a D-man.

It's so frustrating that they don't want to rebuild and be Buffalo yet their decisions are causing them to go exactly down the path that Buffalo took.

Drafting - 9
Development - 7
Trades - 5
Extensions - 6 (7 - 1 point for Sharangovich)
UFA signings and waivers pickups - 7

I average it to about a 7 - 1 point for chasing the playoffs last year and not commiting to getting a top 10 pick. Which is why I voted 6.

It's pretty hard to be bad on purpose absent just throwing games. Have they looked a lot worse without Andersson? I don't think the D has looked a lot worse. And the Flames are horrible now, but they are being outdone by teams who should be much better. It would have been even harder last season, when Wolf was playing lights out.

The Flames were actually starting to fall apart last season around this time and then Vladar turned his game around and joined Wolf in the awesome club. The teams underlying numbers got worse but the goalies got better as did the record. I don't think that was any master plan to go for it.

I was a big believer that they needed to further tear the team down after the 2024 draft. Moving Markstrom was great as was Mangiapane but that was really the time to put Andersson on the table. Prior to any trade protection and with 2 full seasons left. The Flames held onto him for a year and a half and received picks a year and a half to 2 and a half years away.

I am really not a fan of the 18 month pause in the sell off of assets and my biggest beef with the Andersson trade is how far out the picks are.

I wavered between 7 and 8 and ended up at 8 just because I'm a positive person. People are focused on trades and how low the team finishes, both of which are not entirely within the team's control. Even this year the Flames have played badly but won games because the other team was so bad (their win against SJ, for example). Trades take two and sometimes three parties to agree - some people think you can just make a trade happen by magic.

The flaw was MAYBE finishing too high last year, but honestly, Wolf kept them in it, Kadri couldn't be moved and Andersson was having a really bad year for him. They did better trading him this year, and I doubt they plummet just because he's gone. As was shown, Vegas had to lose a contract and roster player to even make the deal happen and that player is pretty good. I imagine the same would have happened last season.

I doubt that the absence of just Rasmus Andersson moves the Flames up 15-16 spots in the draft to get Misa or Frondell. And as it turns out, Reschny may be as good as guys higher, like Hagens, anyway.

I would have called it a 10 if there were better prospects returned in some of the trades, and a few more players traded out. Otherwise, I believe it is going swimmingly!

I am happy with the direction but its frustrating how long it took to take a look in the mirror and realize the path we were on was not going to lead them to the promised land.

They should have made the decision to rebuild the minute both Johnny and Tkachuk decided to leave.

Conroy is the right guy to see this through though. He is committed to getting younger and winning with the youth we build up the organization with.

Probably around a 7 for me. Happy with it finally happening but frustrated it took this long and that they basically got forced into it.

8. They’ve made all the right moves so far. Just need to keep powering through it and with some good scouting, smart trades and a whole lot of luck we can nail the next part which is developing all that talent and turning it into a real team. Tearing it down is the easy part.

Please explain what the Flames could have done differently in a season in which their rookie goaltender performed way above expectations. I mean, relying on two goaltenders with a combined total of 20 or so NHL games between them isn't exactly the way to try to make the playoffs. How exactly could they have picked Misa? Benched Wolf for being too good? Traded away Rasmus for next to nothing? Would trading Andersson last season have even made any difference to the team's performance, the way he was playing with his injury? Do you think the Flames could have convinced Kadri to waive his NMC when the team was doing well and he didn't want to move?

I'm satisfied with what the team has done so far, but it's a work in progress. My overall satisfaction will depend on whether Kadri, Coleman, and an RHD are traded, and for what returns. The team has a star goaltender, one potentially star D, and good forward and back end depth, but needs at least two first line players, including a 1C, as well as a 1st pairing LHD. So I voted a 5, neither satisfied nor dissatisfied at this point, with my assessment incomplete.
