Considering the amount of money the public put it, it would've been nice to name the arena after something or someone with local history (like we used to do with public buildings). Or perhaps atleast someone who was part of Flames lore...Gaudreau, Bearcat, Hotchkiss, King etc...

Nope, gotta max that revenue.

The video shows an aerial view and you can see the upper bowl taking shape.

Community Arena...aka practice facilities for the team, and I wonder if there are community conference rooms / offices...for the team again.

The deal is the deal, but the PR...

After 30+ years with the Saddledome in its current configuration, the new upper bowl seems so small.

On the update during the broadcast over the weekend, they said it has now reached its maximum height. The top of the steel on the south side is going to be the roofline.

That would be nice but sadly that ship has long sailed.

Think of the iconic stadiums and arenas that are no more. Astrodome, Shea, Silverdome, Joe Louis, Three Rivers, Veterans, the Forum... Seems like in all cases, the name dies with it. Locals still call it Mile High in Denver, that's one of the few I can think of. I'm sure in places like Montreal and Toronto they dropped the Gardens and Forum part of the name to be sure the corporate sponsor name was prominent.

Now a cynic would say that if they didn't sell the naming rights to this place, the taxpayers would have paid more.

The stadium in Denver is called Empower Field at Mile High. So the name still lives on officially in some sense.

Lower bowl in new building is ~25 rows (slightly more in the corners), plus 5 in second level and another ~12 rows in the third level.

Basically same size as Saddledome, except bigger lower bowl, smaller upper bowl, and an overhang of 2-3 rows per level.

I went to a game in the Silverdome - completely crappy stadium.

For sure, and people just call it Mile High. I feel like it’s lesson learned for those paying for naming rights. Or maybe people would still call it Mile High, don’t really know. Maybe also helps they didn’t move it at all.

But I don’t think anyone in Montreal still calls it the Forum for example.

There are still a few stadiums that retained their name. Yankee stadium, MSG, Dodger stadium come to mind.

Fenway is another. Then...go to soccer. They take their Stadium names really seriously.

Anfield, Old Trafford, Highbury for a time, even when Newcastle sold their naming rights everyone still calls it St. James', Wrexham's Racecourse, on and on it goes. It becomes tradition regardless of who buys naming rights.

The Saddledome is also a good example, sure, it was always part of the Official name, but I never called it 'Scotiabank Saddledome' or 'Pengrowth Saddledome' or Canadian Airlines or Air Canada...its always just been the Saddledome.

I think you're forgetting the outrage when they dropped the 'Olympic' for Canadian Airlines haha

Well to be fair it can be both a community arena and a practice facility. My daughters team rented ice and practiced at the Predators facility last year which is also a community arena.

My first game was in "The Corral" but for the rest of my life, it's always been "The Dome". Took my daughter to her first game in "The Dome" for Christmas and now she'll grow up with the new stadium to which I will still refer to as "The Dome".
