Default Electrical Upgrade - 200A and new Panel estimates

Anyone done a panel upgrade lately ?

Thinking I might want to upgrade to a 200A Service and a bigger panel...

A recent kitchen reno has filled up the existing panel.

Anyone done one lately ?

Who did you use and approx cost. (In Calgary)

Thanks.

The company I work for does service upgrades. Do you have overhead or underground wiring to your home?

U/G Haven't talked to Enmax yet to see if 200A is doable with the current feeder.

You are definitely going to want to discuss with Enmax. They will be responsible for bringing the wire to the edge of your property. At that point, there are tons of companies who can offer services of bringing the electrical from property line to your home and upgrade the panel/meter base/conductors, etc...

With overhead wires feeding the home through an alley, this can be a pretty reasonable cost. However, with underground wires you can expect a substantial cost, and in many cases, it's not worth it. Enmax will need to trench wires from the transformer to your home, which can mean tearing up neighbours yards, roads, etc... I've seen quotes for this work from Enmax ranging from $30k to $150k, depending on how far away the transformer is and how hard it is to get that higher service to your property edge. From there you still need to consider the cost of trenching through your own property and the upgrade on your panel (typically around $5k). In some newer communities, Enmax may already have the wire size you'd need running by your property already which would be super helpful in terms of cost.

Depending on what your goal is, a load management device can be a much better option if you're looking to add additional load, and if its simply a breaker space issue adding a subpanel can help without replacing the existing panel.

If you want to discuss in more detail and let me know what you're looking to accomplish, I'd be happy to guide you in the right direction if you send a PM.

Detached garage? Can bring the power to a new garage panel then trench from there to your house.

Nah...

I should have clarified...

Alley is paved...Line locate shown the power line on my property u/g but just under grass.

If it is to be replaced it will be straight to the house.

Garage is detached and sub-fed from the main panel.

Ya, sorry Nufy, my experience tells me that you’re likely looking at a fairly high cost for them to bring that across the alley. Newer community or old? Your saving grace would be if some wires are already running parallel from the transformer near property line and you’re just dealing with the on property work to your main panel. A newer community might have 200a service to property line and builder just made a cost decision to only run 100a from there.

Do you have any idea if the cable is in conduit? That would save having to rip up the alley to do the work.
