I won't miss it.

Ship and Anchor owner worried proposed development could ‘contribute to our demise’
https://livewirecalgary.com/2026/01/...oogle_vignette
Quote:
The owner of the iconic Ship and Anchor Pub on 17 Avenue SW fears a proposed development could mean the demise of their Beltline establishment.
“It is unrealistic to think that the music can be muted to the point that it will be acceptable to someone trying to sleep in the apartments. It will almost certainly lead to complaints, which bylaw officers will have to respond to and we will have to address,” he said.
“If, however, this project is approved as currently presented, then putting on live shows as we have for 35 years, free to our customers as they’ve always been, at the same volume as they’ve always been presented, could, in fact, contribute to our demise.”
There was also concern expressed over potential conflict between residents in the new units and Ship customers.
“We don’t think Ship customers are going to be nearly as comfortable in that setting, and that would compromise what has become a very popular spot for the Beltline community further,” Ballantyne said.
“If we were in a situation that some of the residents overlooking the patio are also bothered by the music or crowds on the patio, it might not just be awkward. It is conceivable that it could become openly hostile.”

Rampant speculation occurring on skyscraper nerd websites about the possible location. I'm wondering if this could be the site of the long proposed second City Centre tower in Eau Claire? The first tower went up back around 2010, and rumours always floated around that they were courting a Fairmont or Shangri-La for the second tower.

Mine ended shortly after the Ship. The patio was closing, there were a number of shots lined up for me, and instead of moving inside I thought I'd down them in quick succession so we could go to Wicked Wedge.
I remember entering Wicked Wedge, ordering, etc. but I have no recollection of leaving or anything thereafter despite being conscious. Not puking down the side of the car, not the car wash, not being carried into the house. Nothing.
It was honestly the only time in my life I was blackout drunk.

Very exciting! I'm trying to remember - was the original plan at one time for the second tower to it to hold a Ritz-Carlton? I seem to remember that being a thing.

There's definitely a Ship & Anchor guy. I'm not that guy. I've been probably 20 times and every single time I marvel at how much people like it because I just don't see it. It's meh.
I will say I do enjoy that people love it and it's special to them, so would be a shame for it to go away. Honestly doubt there's anything to worry about right now, though.

Isn’t it just the old Weadickville site at Macleod and 17th? They mention Stampede Park and the BMO expansion in the press release. IIRC the developer(s) had been announced but not the actual hotel brand.

No, that's yet another Truman project that has already had their ceremonial groundbreaking. This is a new one and the drawing from the press release is nothing like the renderings for the Stampede hotel that are out.

Yep my bad. There are a number of clues in the rendering that indicate it’s not that site.

The wording 'Greater Downtown' location tells me it may not be in the core.

With all the references in the press release to the Stampede and BMO Centre and the use of the term "Greater Downtown" (which implies not in "actual" downtown), it seems to be talking about a location near Stampede Park.
I wonder if it's one of the "Future Hotel Sites" on the north side of Stampede Park?

Does any of that scream "Fairmont" though? Yes, they have all that talk about the Stampede redevelopments, but do you really picture that area at all when you think of the Fairmont brand? That's what's hurting my brain.
