If you could trade Whitecloud, who carries a premium as RH dman, and maybe even sign somebody like Ferraro to play on the LH side as a UFA (Flames have long been rumored to like Ferraro) then that would be ideal.

But you don't need to rush to move Whitecloud - unless somebody aggressively comes with a 1st or 1st+ then I think you hold. A 2nd round pick isn't enough to rush to move him now.
I agree with all of this.

I think Bahl will be a star defensive defenceman in the league. I think he matches up very well with Parekh - they both have decent feet, and Bahl just has terrific positioning and obviously his wingspan helps a lot. Bahl also has some offensive upside that he's not shown to date, I suspect. He has a nice shot (actually all the D does right now outside of Hanley).

Brzu if he develops into top 4 will play with Kuz eventually. (Bruise Cruise sounds good). Right now I think he's fine where he is, at 14 minutes a night.

But to me, that isn't even the real issue. The real issue is that you need to have some good defensive defencemen now, to shelter the young players and give them someone to learn from by example. Weegar isn't really that type of player, and Hanley isn't really an everyday NHLer. That leaves Bahl and Whitecloud, and if you trade Whitecloud now it just leaves Bahl. That's not enough, to my mind.
Ok come on now, you can’t use Gio as a comparable for hardly anyone, his entire career bucked every trend. Surely you don’t actually think that.

Tanev, on a contending team should have been a bottom pair defenceman absolutely.

Weegar and Whitecloud are 2 entirely different styles of defenders which once again makes him a poor comparable.

Whitecloud and Bahl are probably the closest on the team in terms of skill sets. I think this team would be just fine having Weegar and Bahl sheltering the rookies along with Kuzy who has a couple pro years already. That’s my opinion anyways.

You were stating it as a rule that a 33-year-old defenceman is only good for a bottom pairing. Any exception at all invalidates that rule.

Tanev played top-4 on a team that finished first in the Western Conference. Before that, he played top-4 on a team that made the conference finals.

Why? If anything, players more often keep their defensive abilities after their offence dries up. There's no particular reason, except for injury, why Whitecloud's style of play should be less effective four years from now.

Kuznetsov is an NHL rookie. He is not experienced enough to be sheltering anybody. Weegar isn't really the guy you want staying at home to cover for an offensive defenceman's mistakes.

Weegar can also play the left side, so it isn't problem that needs immediate attention.

Weegar - Kuznetsov
Bahl - Parekh
Whitecloud - Brzustewicz

works just fine.

With either Hanley or Pachal traded, and the other one kept as a spare.

I don’t think you would get anything for Hanley or Pachal, I don’t even think you would find any takers for either on waivers. Hanley has another year at $1.75m and Pachal has another year at $1.19m.

GMs do give up late picks for guys like Ryan Carpenter. I wouldn't count on it, but sometimes it can happen.

I think you could get a late pick for Hanley. Treliving isn't the only GM in the league who likes a bit of experienced depth on D going into the playoffs.

Usually that’s for pending UFA’s, I don’t think too many playoff teams are going to want to keep Hanley around at $1.75m to be a 7th defenseman.

Seravalli on 960:

says Whitecloud's future with the Flames is TBD (when asked about whether he sees Whitecloud as a piece they use to build the team or an asset they flip)
likes him as a 4/5 on the Flames
questions if Whitecloud's age will mesh with Flames timeline to be become competitive again
Whitecloud's value: says late 1st is probably a stretch, more likely a 2nd plus something
Flames might instead look for a real prospect or a player who is 23 (instead of a pick) who fits their timeline better

then he also seems to confirm that there is value to be had on Coleman and Kadri

TBH I hope they keep Whitecloud as a Weegar replacement.

Only one GM in the NHL has given up anything to get Ryan Carpenter, they didn't even use an actual draft pick on him.. except for the man with the plan, tobacco chewing, chain smoking, draft pick dealing and depth defence stealing; The Wizard, Brad Treliving! lol

They lost Brad Richardson on waivers a day prior, swapping out crap for crap and losing a draft pick in the process

I never said it was a rule? Not sure how to address that. I think you inferred something that was not said.

Tanev has played top 4 (in his mid 30s and beyond) on 0 teams that have done anything significant in the playoffs. I don’t care about presidents trophies or divisional banners, they are useless. I want Stanley cups not Edmonton level regular season stats. I gave a breakdown a few weeks ago showing the insignificance of presidents trophies to Stanley cup victories.

Whitecloud is already viewed as a 4/5 defencemen by pundits like Seravalli, it isn’t a stretch to think he should be pushed down one roster spot over 4+ years later.

Kuznetsov has been pro for a few years in the AHL so he has some seasoning the other youngins don’t.

Late 1st for Whitecloud???? I don't think that's realistic at all but if any team is willing to make that trade Conroy can drive Whitecloud to the airport right now.

edit: Not saying anyone is saying it's realistic, but that it was even uttered is crazy, imo. Even a 2nd would be great.

I'm going to assume you meant something like what D as in David has.

The only problem then I think is you're playing Brz or Parekh higher up he lineup then you'd like, or you're playing Whitecloud top pairing minutes.

Weegar - Whitecloud
Bahl - Parekh / Brz
Kuznetsov - Brz/ Parekh

Maybe something like that works...but if could sign Ferraro and then flip Whitecloud that would be ideal IMO

Apparently they started getting calls for Whitecloud basically the instant they got him.

You cant have all 24 year-olds on the team. That's how you become Buffalo.
