I think the argument can go both ways as long as we weren't in the room and don't know. However, from the media, it sounds like Ras and his agent indicated openness to signing an extension and open communication with Conroy throughout - only to change his mind Sunday morning unexpectedly. This can mean that the notion of Rasmus "tells it like it is all the time with no hidden agenda" is true but the contract extension talks simply didn't hit what he wanted and he was tired of it - or it could mean that Ras and his wife (always have to consider the wife) took advice from his agent who told him to hold off - you can get more later.
I'm not saying that Conroy needs to understand that it's not just your friend that you are dealing with. But rather, it's your friend PLUS his wife PLUS his agent PLUS millions of dollars - you really can't take everything they say 100% - not because they are bad people but because the other influencers that are closer to them will sway them.
I can't say Conroy did wrong because I don't know. But I cannot say he did everything perfectly - also because I don't know.
I speculate opinion since this is the platform to do it.

As usual it's easy to be an armchair GM thinking you could have done better when there doesn't really seem to be a way for him to win in a bunch of peoples eyes.

Out of thanks, but agree.

I think Weegar might be happy here, but he also may want a move too. He took a while to sign here after that trade. Was it to get a feel for the city? Or was it to figure out if this team was good enough to be competitive over the course of his contract?
I remember listening to Coleman on a podcast somewhere on him signing here because he thought that Calgary was going to be competitive enough, and then Gaudreau and Tkachuk left.
They may be comfortable here, but most players want to play for a team that is competitive. Whether it is the right move or not to trade Weegar is up for debate. I doubt that Weegar would demand a trade, but I would be surprised if he was against one.

I think we'll get lucky to get a 1st for Coleman after seeing the way the other shoes have dropped. Toffoli, Hanifin, Tanev, Zadorov have all went for less then I was expecting
I could see a 2nd + a decent prospect / buried young player.
2nd + Borque
2nd + Beck
type of deal.
With Kadri I think if you can snag something close to the Rasmus deal, 1st + 2nd, you take it.

Not to mention also that his opinion may change after seeing Rasmus traded, and potentially others before the deadline too.

I would really love for it to work out that they get a 1st for Coleman. However, it seems like it is really rare these days to get a 1st round pick for a winger… especially a 3rd line winger. I’m sure there are examples out there of wingers for 1st round picks but I think the going rate for a quality winger is usually a 2nd round pick + B-level prospect.

Mere hours after Andersson is dealt the Eye of Sauron's gaze seems to be fixated firmly on Weegar now. Can't wait to read all about it from the usual suspects for the next couple years.

The Flames have to still make room for Pospisil, Gridin.. and dare I say it, Stromgren.
Does Honzek come back this season?
All in all - they need to trade some bodies or waive them: Lomberg, Kirkland, Beecher... Coleman, Kadri
Currently, they have like 18 forwards who can play. Not to mention the logjam on defense..

You're probably right, but 2 playoff runs from Coleman might be enough to get a 1st from a contender

My prediction going forward:
This season:
-Coleman for a 1st or 2nd+
-Hanley for a 4th
-Frost for a 2nd
Next season:
-Kadri for a 1st + young C
-Whitecloud for a 2nd

Yes I realize this leaves us with no C aside from Backlund.
I expect we will grab a young C via trade or sign a UFA to a short-term deal.

I feel like Tampa reunion has been brought up a few times my insiders.
Their next first is 2028. They have all their 2nds.
O'reilly would be ideal but doesn't seem realistic to me anymore.
2nd + Finley? Finley + Klapka would be a fun line..
2nd + Schmidt from the Stars would be a nice package

I don’t see teams giving up as much for a player on the IR, and he might be there for a while

The only thing he could have done differently is trade him in the 2024 offseason when they traded differently. Who knows how much better offers would have been but he let himself get boxed in again. Good rental trade though

Right now, the Flames have Weegar, Whitecloud, Pachal, Brzustewicz, and Parekh as right-shot d-men on the NHL roster (Parekh is in the AHL currently, which buys them some time). They are all under contract for at least one more season.
Even with Weegar being able to play on the left side, that's still at least one too many for the long-term.
It seems reasonable to speculate that at least one of them could be moved before the deadline. I suspect Pachal for a mid-round pick is the most likely, but if a team steps up in a big way with an offer for Weegar or Whitecloud, I could see one of them being moved too.

It's not a sane expectation to me, you or likely Conroy but it is to Murray/Maloney and everyone on the locker room side of the team.

Who is the Flames core as of today?
Wolf, Parekh, Coronato, Bahl, BRZ?
Is everyone else fair game to be traded?

Got to include Huberdeau lol. Sharangovich likely as well given how streaky he is.
