Yeah there is nothing about conditions on the 1st rd pick in 27 in the Flames release even though they are specific about the 2nd rounder.
Quote:
|
The Flames have acquired defenceman Zach Whitecloud, prospect defenceman Abram Wiebe, a 2027 first round pick (VGK), and a conditional 2028 second round pick (VGK) from Vegas in exchange for defenceman Rasmus Andersson. The 2028 second round pick becomes a first round selection if Vegas wins the 2026 Stanley Cup.

So you really have to hope the Knights have an unforeseen bad year after winning the cup this year!

I actually kinda like this option. Have a tough, defensively reliable vet to keep the kids from getting caved in.

I guess the focus no shifts to Coleman and Kadri. Hopefully the returns end up with much more universal praise (if they happen).

Trade em all. Take back bad deals. Conny needs to watch moneyball and draft day.

Something to consider with all these potential extra first round picks..
Once the Flames have a few more core players, they can likely be one of the teams with enough assets to make a big play for a stud player in a trade.

Ironically, Wiebe models his game after Zach Whitecloud --> https://thehockeywriters.com/abram-w...-organization/

“I think the big one would probably be Zach Whitecloud,” Abram said. “He actually spoke at our first development camp about his past, and he’s someone I’ve looked up to ever since I was drafted by them. He’s a big, 200-foot defenseman, and that’s how I see myself as a player as well. I try to watch him as much as I can and take bits and pieces from his game.”

Vegas's press release has conditional 1st on the 27 pick.

I would be shocked if we trade him.

I’m shocked you think that… they would have tried to re-sign him they wanted to stay competitive. This could also open them up to trading Weegar if you can be a little less myopic.

If Whitecloud were a replacement for Andersson, the trade would have been 1 for 1

How long does Calgary own Wiebe's rights?
Drafted in 2022, went back to the BCHL for a season, and he is in his 3rd year of college. If he returns to the NCAA for one more season, can he become a UFA?

Wait a minute, if they win the cup and they are bottom 10 next year, we only get a 2029 pick, that can't be right

Devils fan here... I found this trade interesting because our GM sucks and has pinned himself into a corner by giving out NTCs and NMCs like they're candy and we resent him because he can't make any moves right now as the deadline approaches, but I really thought you flame fans would like this deal because they're getting a 1st and a 2nd, and the second could potentially become a 1st.
At the risk of sounding ignorant and insulting your from a prayer, I feel like Andersson was an average second pair defenseman .
If I'm a Knights fan, on the one hand it's encouraging to see my general manager make moves and always go for a cup run, but at the same time I would be upset that we just gave up quite a lot of our future.
Agree? Disagree?

If the Knights win the cup then Flames get the 28th 1st. They already own the 27 1st. If they finish bottom ten in 2027 then the 27 slides to 28 and the 28 slides to 29

Whitecloud has 2 more years at $2.5 million so they saved some capspace. Having said that though. They now have the following under contract next year.
Weegar
Bahl
Kuznetsov
Parekh
Whitecloud
Pachal
Brzustewicz
Hanley
So someone doesn’t fit. Hopefully it’s not one of the young players. But I would guess the odd man out would be one of Parekh, Brzustewicz, Pachal. I think Kuznetsov has solidified a spot. Hanley seems to be the comfortable shoe.
Guess it leaves you with 8 D that can play if there are injuries.
Return is way better than Andersson walking to free agency. Wondering if any more parts will be leaving. We definitely don’t need anymore Dmen.
Don’t know anything about Wiebe but a first and a second round pick is decent.

Part of it is all the twitter hype, it was very reminiscent of Markstrom for the 10th overall and Mercer and the second is that they probably got a crappier return by not trading him in the 2024 offseason.

We don't like any deals the Flames make, it's just how we're wired as fans
I think you're under-rating Andersson. However, I agree with you that it is a good return.
As for the Knights' future, it is now possible that the Flames own 3 consecutive 1st round picks of theirs - which would be hilarious
