In the short term, probably just more Chinese made cars that we already have here (Tesla, Polestar, etc.) or brands that already exist here (Volvo is owned by Geely). Building up the ability to sell and service the vehicles in Canada probably isn't viable for most Chinese brands when they're only able to import so few in a year. And the current international trade situation isn't particularly stable, so I'd be surprised if they didn't want to test the waters a bit before they invest a bunch of resources.

But it sounds like they want half of the imports to be cheaper models by 2030 and they're also hinting at Canadian production (similar to what's happening in Europe), so in the mid-term I'd expect something like what we're seeing in Australia, Europe, and Mexico where BYD, Geely, SAIC, etc. are entering the market.

Low margin affordable cars built there.

High margins fancy cars partially built here.

Canada is one of the few countries where car sales are flat or decreasing. People coming to their senses and passing on $50k Civics and $100k F150s, maybe.

I mean seriously, how stupid do you have to be to buy something like that or worse.

With a couple of clicks they could take over a car and drive it into a wall or another car or a crowd of people.

I realize that the same is true of Tesla and I would honestly advocate for kicking Tesla out of the country for security reasons.

IMO, before China should be able to send their cars here, they should build a Canadian office for their software and ensure that all of the components in their cars sold in Canada are forced to run a Canadian made version of their software that is audited by CSIS or something to eliminate potential shenanigans.
You really have not thought this through.

Every electronic device with a CPU that you own probably has its ‘brain’ manufactured in China, or somewhere else by a Chinese company. That includes American cars.

If China wanted to force its national companies they could put little control chips just about anywhere on the board to ‘own’ it. There’s been stories of that stuff in network gear, although there isn’t any hard proof.

But discovery of something like that is bad for business and there are lots of other ways China already owns your stuff in other ways. It’s unnecessary to sabotage your car. We already need them more than they need us.

If what you posted is how you legitimately feel and are worried about then there isn’t a big enough tin foil hat in the world to protect you.

China doesn't need to steal your information. People give it up willingly all the time. Temu, AliExpress, tiktok etc. The amount of password breaches is already nuts and I would imagine almost everyone's information is already floating around.

Tesla Superchargers with the Magic Dock -- are these things not the most f-cking fussy things on the planet, or are they just not good in the cold?

Went to plug into a Supercharger while doing some testing with the Jag and a new OBD-BLE adapter to use with A Better Route Planner and figured I'd get some juice since we were under 40%.

I opened the Tesla app, chose the 12 Avenue SE Supercharger location, entered the tag of the unit I was in front of, tapped the button to confirm. It says push in, then pull out on the charger to remove the charger with the Magic Dock attached... well, it sure didn't. The regular NACS lead came out, the CCS1 adapter was still in the charger. Tried again. Nope, nothing. And again. Cancelled the charge in the app, tried again. Nope, feck all.

My hands are getting bloody cold by now, so I run around to the back of the car and grab my NACS to CCS1 adapter, pop it on the NACS lead and plug the car in. It starts charging, but barely exceeds 13kWh charging speed... the car will usually be anywhere between 50-80kWh being returned to the battery on a Supercharger, and will happily max out a 50kW charger. The adapter is specifically for Superchargers so as to charge as quickly as possible.

I've only gotten the Supercharger Magic Dock to work ONCE and it was after three times of fighting with the stupid thing before the charger finally released the dock adapter with the charging lead. Both times have been when it is cold out, since the granny charger is 'good enough' in positive temperatures.

The great thing about EV's is you don't need to stand around in the cold filling them with gas. The bad part is that sometimes wrangling the electrons is even more ####ty. At least if they spill any it's instant death instead of smelling like gas all day.

According to this, at 1:30, you need to press the button for two seconds, and someone else said you may need to push up a bit to get it to lock the adapter in as you push the button.

I'm sure if you can't figure it out, our boomer parents will be just fine. It's almost like a sticker with instructions on the charger might help. But that's an extra part.

Yeah, I did see that somewhere, the little animation the Tesla app shows doesn't mention the 'hold the button for two seconds' thing. It just shows push further inward then pull out. I even did try pressing the button, but I guess not for two whole Mississippis.

It being bloody cold and my hands turning to ice definitely played a role in not experimenting too much.
