I would definately back this idea. The BnB idea is normally inexpensive if not on a long weekend and a great idea. Also you meet people you would normally never interact with, can be a real fun time.

I just left a reply, not sure where it went. My suggestion was go out early set up a picnic in a remote riverbank setting. Go pick her up, tell her you are going to Jasper or Banff or whatever, but you must make a stop. When you get to the remote area, which you must remember and have a picnic waiting for her with candles and such...you are going to get freaky on a riverbank which is good for all! Of course have a hotel room and gift on the way past your destination!
Sorry for the double post...I am impatient, but I am like Hitch, I like to help my fellow brothers out!

Where exactly do i find a remote place? I mean I'm in edmonton, even if i find a quiet place thats going to be me driving for like 4 hours beforehand to get everything ready at a place near kananaskis. Not that i wouldn't do it, but finding a quiet place and stashing food for a day or two seems like a good way to attract a bear

Any more ideas? Anyone? How about the ladies on the board? What would be your perfect one year anniversary?

Well that's easy! A hockey game! Unfortunately there aren't any at that time, and I don't know what else she's into, but sometimes simple is best. You don't want to set an expectation that can't be met every year. I like the idea of a picnic... but perhaps with a limo. Tell her you'll pick her up and arrive with a limo and a picnic basket.

Ok how abouts:
Set up a scavenger hunt in your house. Each clue will have a red long-stemmed rose attached. There will be 12 clues, and in the end she'll have the whole bouquet. anyways the clues lead to a gift certificate that's homemade that tells her to go out and buy herself(on you) a nice outfit(dress, shoes...etc..). also a gift certificate to get her hair and makeup done possibly. girls love shopping and being pampered and suprises and who doesn't love a good scavenger hunt??
anyways then take her to dinner- i'd say maybe the calgary tower for the view.
the dinner barely even matters because she'll be so blown away by the thought and effort of what lead to it.

Oh man. I'd die if a man bought me a trip to the hair salon. That alone costs enough when done properly to break the bank. Every time I go I hate myself for it, but I love it so much I can't help myself. Anyhew, /side rant.
Personally, I don't think a guy should go that all out for a one year anniversary. It smacks of trying too hard to please. Do you want to have to top that for every year for the rest of your life if you end up living that long with this woman? It's a never-ending game of come-uppance with yourself. Maybe I'm too 'low maintainance' or whatever you want to call it, but even just the scavenger hunt is lovely for a one year anniversary.
You start it... take her to the first clue and then leave her. Have everything you need to set up your picnic, except the basket and the food. You have that prepared for her as the final clue. Put directions on top of the basket to where you'll be setting up your picnic, and she can bring the food (that you've prepared and put in the basket along with a lovely bottle of wine,) to wherever it is that you've picked out. When she gets there she'll be met with a scene out of your own imagination. Candles, blanket, flowers, whatever it is that's in your budget, but do something even if it's just wowing her with the view and a blanket and pillows. Either way you're likely to get some and you've created an excellent memory.

No disrespect intended, but why does a simple act of showing love for another person have to have an alterior motive? I go through this type of thing every year at Christmas where family and relatives are comparing cost wise what each other gave and how they have to somehow match or do better. I tell them it's the thought that counts and one shouldn't worry about what the other does. This year I finally got through to them and they agreed.
Apologies to Finner for going off topic.

Why does the simple act of showing love for someone have to cost an arm and a leg? Some of the best gifts are the most thoughtful, not the most expensive. Memories are free, why do you need to spend a lot of money to make them?

Guys I'm loving these ideas, keep them coming, its nice being able to use the collective power of CP to brainstorm ideas.
Firefly : In terms of setting the bar to high, i can definately see where you are coming from. But with her starting law school, and me working and in school, we are probably aren't going to have a whole lot of time next year, except for maybe a weekend or two where we both don't have something pressing to do.
I thought of doing a picnic, or a limo as some of you suggested, but to be totally honest i WANT few days alone with her, not just a night.
And if not a few nights, then something totally romantic (I think bingo mentioned dog sledding under the stars - something like that).

A big bowl of chilli, a thick blanket, and a surprise game of dutch oven.
Yup that ought to do it.

Also where is the closest houseboating lake to Edmonton? I don't really want to drive 6 hours when its just for a weekend.
|
Houseboats in Sicamous (which is pretty far from Edmonton) are usually booked as early as a year in advance for the summer months, so it would probably be near impossible to rent one for the end of August. The only way would be if someone cancelled at the last minute but that's probably not likely. The reason I know is because I used to work at the Information Centre there and people would come in asking about houseboats for the weekend and we would try not to laugh at them.

FireFly is content with a nose-bleed ticket to the game and some Dome nacho's! Single boys, take notes!

That's totally true. Except that nachos doesn't need an apostrophe. And I'd likely need a heroin beer as well. Maybe two.
