Icon36 Rangers sign Will Borgen to 5 year extension ($4.1M AAV)

https://www.nhl.com/news/will-borgen...w-york-rangers

Quote:
Will Borgen signed a five-year, $20.5 million contract with the New York Rangers on Saturday. It has an average annual value of $4.1 million and begins next season.

The 28-year-old defenseman is in the final season of a two-year contract he signed with the Seattle Kraken on July 7, 2023, and could have become a restricted free agent after the season.

Borgen has five points (two goals, three assists) in 50 games this season, including a goal and two assists in 17 games with the Rangers, with whom he has averaged 18:35 of ice time per game. He was acquired in a trade with the Seattle Kraken on Dec. 18, along with a third-and-fifth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft for forward Kaapo Kakko.
Heh. Pretty good extension for a rather low skilled NHL calibre d-man.

What am I missing in thinking this makes the Pachal extension seem like a great deal. Is Will Borgen a guy you want on a 5 year deal?

People absolutely love giving bottom pair guys tons of money. What can he do that someone you can sign at league minimum can't?

Reminds me of the KK overpay. Justifying a crappy trade

Nope. Never. Pachal is a lot better than this guy.

Nothing. This guy is waiver wire material NHL talent.

Drury is handicapping the Rags and it's a hilarious thing.

Still can't believe this scrub got this super rich contract. Guy should've got a 2 year extension at very most and a $1.5M AAV at max.

Thank heavens I'm not a Rangers fan so this deal is totally gobsmackingly hilarious.

Rags management are all out dense for allowing this ridiculous contract to this limited player.

Nice one, Drury.

Full stop, Borgen just isn't an NHL calibre D-man actually.

You get killed 10-2 by a hated rival, then announce and extension for a bottom pair dman that you should probably try to trade as you are going nowhere.

What a tone deaf organization.

Conversation with self:

‘Who?’
‘Dunno. But the contract sounds like a stinker.’
‘Oh, wait, this thread is actually from last season.’
‘And I’m still going “Who?” I guess the contract really was a stinker. ‘
