Its likely a move connected to another move

Free up cap then acquire another player

Not necessarily. Danault wanted out and there was definitely friction between him and management.

Yep now they have cap space

Why would they not use it?

Danault was a black hole. Addition through subtraction. I bet that the Kings are going to see if production increases in his absence, before deciding on what to do with the cap space.

I can see why MTL would do this - Danault has been awful this year, but was a 40 pt player the prior 2 years. I would think they feel he can bounce back somewhat in Montreal, being a French Quebeccer.

The cost isn't high, so it's a good gamble.

But if Danault is worth a 2nd, Kadri is worth a 1st +

So he'll give up almost immediately like a repeat of the Plains of Abraham?

Danault and his 5 assists in his 30 games is not a Kadri equivalent. Maybe this works for Montreal, but I doubt it. Danault just isn't the same player he was before.

This gives LA another 2nd round pick to add to whatever they have to trade in order to be better in some way. I guess in Holland's hands, it will probably end up being thrown away though. However, in theory, I like this for the Kings as much as it gives them a bit more ammo to load up for the playoffs, because as it stands right now, they are simply 1st round fodder.

If a center who is goalless so far, and has only registered 5 assists gets you a 2nd, imagine what Kadri who has 8 goals and 31 points gets you. Danault is a 3rd line center right now, and probably playing more like a 4th liner. If he rebounds, then yep, he can be a legitimately decent 2nd line center. Guess we will see what happens there. Kadri is still a high-end 2nd line center with the way he is playing. I think the market prices should reflect it.
