Maybe some of our more knowledgeable prospect watchers can comment on Hurtig vs Phillips. Outside of Hurtig being a little older, they both appear to be large, strong junior age defensive Dmen. Are these guys comparable at all? Do they have similar games and upsides?

They are similar in that both are mostly stay-at-home defensemen who play a shutdown game, and neither offer much in the other end of the ice.

I think Hurtig has better puck-skill, and is a better passer, but Phillips is far meaner, more athletic, and much more intimidating.

Phillips’ mobility in camp really surprised me, he’s been working hard at it.

Dec.27th:

Phillips returns to the Green Bay Gamblers from playing in the World Junior A Challenge (1 assist in 5 games), and has gone from wearing #5 to wearing #30. All zeroes today in a 6-3 win over Dubuque. 18gp/1g/3a/4pts,+8, 68 PIM.

The US Selects won the Junior A Challenge by beating Canada West, 5-1 in the final.

Dec.29th:

Phillips is back wearing #5 for the Green Bay Gamblers, and he gets no points (-1) in a 3-2 OT win over Dubuque. 19gp/1g/3a/4pts,+7, 68 PIM. After a rough start to the season, the Gamblers are now first in the USHL, and have won an incredible 13 straight!

Maceo is one prospect I’m interested to see develop. If he keeps progressing to the point that he could make the big club we could have a number of monsters on the blueline.

Imagine Bahl (6’ 6” 230lb), Kuznetsov (6’ 4” 210), Phillips (6’ 6” 228lb) and Bichsel (6’ 7” 237lb) if we could pry him out of Dallas in an Andersson trade. It would be like a starting dline.

Dont forget Axel Hurtig at 6-4 217. Flames are high on him.
